FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 37 TCU men's tennis team clinched a spot in the 2015 ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a decisive 4-1 victory over No. 45 LSU on Sunday afternoon in College Station, Texas at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (3-0) earned a bid to the indoor championships that are being held in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 12-15, by claiming the doubles point against the Tigers (3-1) and capturing three singles matches. TCU will take part in the national tournament for the first time since 2001 when the Frogs advanced to the semifinals.
"I am obviously happy and proud for the guys again today because it is hard to have such a big win and then come back ready to play the next day," coach David Roditi said. "I felt like the guys were ready today and we knew that we were going to have a really tough match with LSU. They know our players very well, they are a good team and the conditions were very different today.
"Overall, it is a great to see that both TCU tennis programs are going to the national indoor championships in the same year. I would like to think that will be more the norm than the exceptions in the years to come. I thought the girls had an awesome day especially to beat Texas A&M in the qualifying match. They stayed, watched and cheered us on during our match, which was really fun and greatly appreciated."
TCU opened the competition with Arnau Dachs and Guillermo Nuñez snagging a victory in doubles on court three. The duo were able to easily defeat Justin Butsch and Andrew Korinek 6-2. The Frogs completed the doubles point just moments later with the No. 15 ranked pair of Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson taking down Chris Simpson and Tam Trinh at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.
"It was good for us to get that doubles point," Roditi said. "That was a part of our match that we thought we could improve from yesterday and I thought we played better in doubles today."
LSU was able to even up the score at 1-1 after taking the first victory in singles on court five, but TCU took the lead right back with Dachs upsetting his first ranked opponent of the season by taking down No. 111 Butsch. Dachs took 12 of the 15 games played and won the match, 6-2, 6-1.
Up 2-1, No. 91 Will Stein put the third point on the board for TCU by defeating Andrew Korinek, 6-3, 6-4 on court three. No. 87 Guillermo Nuñez clinched the match for the Frogs with a three-set 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Simon Freund at No. 6 singles.
"Another great performance by Arnau Dachs and it was a huge win for Will Stein," Roditi said. "For Will to step up with the least amount of experience as a singles player and defeat a guy he grew up with was huge. I also thought it was a big boost and a big point for our team and then Guillermo did a great job closing out the match."
TCU will play in two dual matches before heading to the indoor championships with the Frogs welcoming New Mexico for a home match on Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to Tulsa for a match on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
"We are happy and proud to be going to Chicago, but before that happens, we have some really big matches against New Mexico and Tulsa," Roditi said. "Those matches will most likely be indoors and will help us prepare for the indoor championships."
