FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 45 TCU women's tennis team opened the season with a convincing 5-2 victory over Missouri at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The Horned Frogs (1-0) were able to snag the first victory under the helm of new head coach Lee Taylor Walker by easily taking the doubles point against the Tigers (1-1), before claiming four of the six singles matches in straight sets to seal the victory for the team.
"It was a great way to start the season," Walker said. "Mainly it was just fun to watch the girls enjoy themselves and compete well. It was a beautiful day and we appreciate the fans that came out.
"Not only did we win, but we also learned some things we can improve and we look forward to working on those things this week and preparing to make a run at the National Indoor Championships next weekend."
In the doubles portion of the competition, TCU got off to a quick start as Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin blanked Alex Clark and Bea Machado Santos 6-0 on court one. The Frogs wrapped up doubles play just a short moment later with Alexis Pereira and Palina Dubavets claiming a 6-2 win over Clare Raley and Madison Rhyner on court three.
Simona Parajova notched the second point on the board for TCU by taking care of Clark on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Missouri struck back by taking the victory on court five, before Sofiko Kadzhaya picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win on court three over Raley to up the score to 3-1 in favor of the Frogs.
The win for the Frogs would not be far off, as Tan was able to seal the victory on court one for TCU by knocking out Kelli Hine, 6-1, 6-4. Arantekin retired on court six to give Missouri its final point, but Palina Dubavets gutted out the final win for TCU by defeating Rhyner 6-3, 7-6 (6) at the No. 4 singles position.
TCU will head next to College Station for the ITA National Kick-Off Weekend on January 24-25 at Texas A&M, with the Frogs taking on Houston in the first round. The Aggies and North Texas will also be on hand, with the winner of the four-team tournament advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championship at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 6-9.
