FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 41 TCU women's tennis team blanked No. 35 Houston, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 2015 ITA National Kick-Off Weekend in College Station, Texas at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (2-0) were able to easily take the doubles point against the Cougars (1-2), before sweeping in straight sets the singles matches on courts four, five and six to seal the victory and move into the second round of the tournament.
"I am really proud of the entire team, but especially our young girls," coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "Our freshmen and Seda (Arantekin) really closed out their matches the right way and are learning and getting better. The nice thing about our team right now is that we are learning so many ways we can improve and get better.
"Tomorrow will be a competitive match and we are prepared to bring our best effort. The atmosphere was great as well because after our match, we were able to support our men's team and help them to a great victory. It almost felt like we were playing at home. It was a good day for TCU tennis and tomorrow will be a great day as well."
TCU opened the match by dominating on court two in doubles with Simona Parajova and Sofiko Kadzhaya teaming up for their first dual match together for a 6-0 victory over Elena Kordolaimi and Rocio Martin.
The Frogs looked to the freshmen duo of Palina Dubavets and Alexis Pereira to close out the doubles point on court three, as the pair clinched the team point with a 6-3 victory over Maria Cardenas and Charlotte Phillips.
In the singles portion of the match, TCU's bottom part of the lineup proved to be the strongest as Dubavets, Pereira and Seda Arantekin all came out victorious with straight set wins.
Pereira put the second point on the board for the Frogs, as the newcomer only dropped one game the entire match for a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cardenas at No. 5 singles. Dubavets followed up Pereira's performance by picking up the victory on court four with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mina Markovic for a 3-0 advantage for the Frogs.
Arantekin finished off the victory for TCU by claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 singles position over Philips to put the Frogs into the second round of the tournament.
TCU will faceoff with No. 11 Texas A&M on Sunday, Jan. 25 at Noon, with the winner of the match advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va., on Feb. 6-9 at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
