FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 37 TCU men's tennis team opened the spring home schedule by dominating UCSB in a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (1-0) were able to get valuable experience for their freshmen, as all three contributed to the win over the Gauchos (0-1) in the players first time competing on the Bernard J. `Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
"This was a really good win to open the season for the team," head coach David Roditi said. "The freshmen all got to play today and these matches gave them good experience and confidence going into the season. It is always special to get a `W' in the home opener and it is even better that we are going to Texas A&M next weekend with a win."
The senior duo of Facundo Lugones and Arnau Dachs got the first win of the day and the first part of the doubles point for TCU with a commanding 6-2 win on court two. Guillermo Nuñez and Hudson Blake had to fight off being down in their match on court three and came back to take a 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles to secure the doubles point for the Frogs.
Dachs continued his winning ways by snagging the first singles win for TCU by easily handling Morgan Mays, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. No. 24 and freshman Cameron Norrie followed suit and upped the score to 3-0 for the Frogs by taking out Tobias Glaskov, 6-2, 6-1, on court one.
Freshman Trevor Johnson clinched the match for TCU and was able to post his first dual match victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Teague Hamilton. The Frogs did not stop there, with senior and No. 91 Will Stein notching his own victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Cody Rakela at No. 3 singles.
The final freshman, No. 87 Guillermo Nuñez, had to go to three sets to complete his victory, but was able to handle Nathan Eshmade, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 to finish off TCU with six points in the win.
TCU will head next to College Station for the ITA National Kick-Off Weekend on January 23-24 at Texas A&M, with the Frogs taking the Aggies in the first round. LSU and San Diego will also be on hand, with the winner of the four-team tournament advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 12-15.
