VIDEO: Miles Shoots in Final FORT WORTH - A pair of two TCU rifle team members recently traveled to Spain to represent USA Shooting at the World Championships. Mindy Miles and Katie Bridges put together solid performances at the championships.
A newcomer on the squad this fall, Miles turned in a strong performance in the junior women's air rifle event. In the junior women's qualifier, she posted the top performance for US women and finished third after shooting a 417.4. The mark put her into the finals where she finished eighth.
For Miles, it was the first time in her career she had qualified for an international final. To make the final in world level competition, the top eight shooters in the qualification round move on to an eight person final elimination. Shooting alongside Miles in the final were participants from Germany (2), Iran (2), Italy, South Korea and Switzerland.
Shooting in the women's 50 Meter Smallbore Prone, Bridges put together a bronze medal performance. Her score was just 1.9 points below the world junior record in the event. She opened her match with a 106.8, which was the highest "10 shot string" fired among all competitors in the open and junior women prone events.
Through six rounds of shooting, Bridges led the US women with a final tally of 622.3, helping the United States to a fourth place finish in the team event.
Also competing at the World Championships were former Horned Frogs Sarah Beard and Erin Lorenzen.
Lorenzen won a bronze medal competing in the 300 Meter Highpower 3-Position event. She fired a score of 578, tying with Estonia's Anzela Voronova. However, 19 of Lorenzen's 60 rounds were center shots to take the bronze medal.
Beard's highest finish at the championships came in the 10 Meter Air Rifle event. She finished 17th in the world after firing a four-round total of 414.8.
Sally Li will be the next Horned Frog to compete internationally traveling to Incheon, South Korea, where she will be competing in the Asian Games next week in the smallbore rifle events for women.
