FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's tennis team bowed out of the USTA/ITA Intercollegiate National Indoor Championships on Friday night at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Competing in the consolation bracket of doubles and singles, Cameron Norrie dropped his first round match in the singles draw, while the No. 5 ranked pair of Nick Chappell and Will Stein lost in their opening round match.
Norrie opened competition for the Horned Frogs on Friday and faced off against No. 6 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois in the 16-draw bracket. Norrie and Hiltzik battled hard in the first set and were forced into a tiebreaker, but Hiltzik was able to come away with the first set after an 8-6 win in the tiebraker. Hiltzik controlled the match from that point forward and took the second set 6-1 and the match.
On the doubles side, Chappell and Stein would have to take on Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane of Virginia. The TCU duo dropped the first set 6-4, but rebounded in the second set and were able to force a tiebreaker. The Virginia pair were able to finish out the match and took the tiebreaker 7-5 to seal the victory in the match.
The freshmen duo of Norrie and Trevor Johnson were scheduled to participate in the consolation draw of doubles, but withdrew before the start of the match.
With the completion of competition at national indoors, TCU now concludes its 2014 fall season. The Frogs will return to dual match action beginning in January with the FGCU Hidden Dual on Jan. 7, before hosting UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 18 to open the spring home schedule.
