"I thought up until they scored their first goal, we had control of the game," said head coach Eric Bell. "We gave up one shot for a goal and it turns into another goal and we are not able to rebound which is disappointing. We have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a lineup that works."
North Texas made an early push, earning a trio of corner kicks in the match's first 10 minutes. None of the corners resulted in a shot as the TCU defense did a good job of clearing the space in front of Vittoria Arnold. It was TCU who got the game's first shot, but Michelle Prokof's attempt sailed just wide of the intended target.
Five minutes later, North Texas capitalized to take a 1-0 lead. Karla Pineda's initial attempt was blocked, but she recovered and fed the ball to a wide-open Rachel Holden. The Mean Green freshman didn't miss as she sent the ball low and to the far side of the goal for the lead.
Just four minutes after the first goal, North Texas found itself with a similar opportunity and pushed its lead to two, 2-0. Vanessa Ibewuike fed the ball to the left side and right to the foot of Amber Haggerty who's shot to the near post deflected off Arnold's hands and into the back of the net.
"I think they were relatively organized on defense, but it was more about us than them," said Bell. "We were not able to complete 10-yard passes without pressure and that makes it kind of difficult. At the beginning of the game we had our way with the ball, played wherever we wanted to. We were able to stay in their end for a lot of the game and then they counter, get a shot and it goes in."
TCU made a late push to try and get a goal before halftime, but North Texas' goalkeeper, Haley Riley made three saves to keep the two-goal lead in tact.
Rebekah Foreman had the Frogs' best chance in the half as she headed the ball from the top of the penalty box. Riley knocked the ball over the goal, setting up a corner kick. She intercepted the cross feed and cleared the ball away from danger.
A much more physical half followed in the second. North Texas fired 12 shots towards the net and Arnold made four saves to keep the game within reach.
The Frogs dodged an early bullet in the first minute of the half as Haggerty hit the post. Arnold made back-to-back saves in the 51st minute on Tori Adame and Ibewuike.
Once again, TCU made a push late in the half, carrying the ball deep into Mean Green territory. Lexi Harris and Michelle Prokof fired a pair of quality shots towards the goal, but each time Riley was there to make the save.
With the loss, TCU falls to 2-3-1 overall. The Frogs will hit the road for a Thursday night date with crosstown rival, SMU. Match time in Dallas is set for 7 p.m.
