"It didn't end up like we wanted it to. I think we had a good idea of what they wanted to do, but we didn't come out and execute the game plan in order to be successful," said head coach Eric Bell. "Hat's off to Illinois State for playing a good game. We've got to get better. The energy was okay, but I thought we were a little nervous playing our first home game. Psychologically, I don't think we were necessarily ready for the game."
An evenly matched contest saw TCU end the game with a 17-14 shot advantage. Vittoria Arnold made eight saves on 10 shots, but TCU was only able to solve the Redbirds' Aryn Newsom once on six shots.
Trailing 2-0 with 20 minutes to go in the game, the Horned Frogs made a furious push to get back in the game. A foul by the Redbirds set up a free kick about 25 yards out for the Frogs. Bobbi Clemmer's shot was deflected over the end line by the Redbird goalkeeper setting up a corner kick. Clemmer's feed was right on target as she found the head of Meghan Murphy who put it in the back of the net to pull the Frogs within one, 2-1.
The Frogs continued to push to try and not the game at two. With under a minute to go, the Frogs carried the ball down field. A foul just outside the penalty area set up a prime opportunity for the Frogs. Makenzie Koch took the free kick. Her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and right to Brittany Slyman who headed the ball right into the waiting arms of Newsom.
"It was a matter of us not being able to keep the ball and do the things we wanted," said Bell. "We had enough chances with 10 corner kicks and some other dangerous opportunities with long throws and some decent chances to run a play as well and weren't good enough."
TCU had the game's first scoring opportunity just a minute into the contest. A cross into the six-yard box was headed by Lauren Sajewich, but Newsom made a diving stop to keep the Frogs scoreless.
Ten minutes later, the Redbirds took a 1-0 lead. Anna Stinson fed the ball through traffic and found an open Rachel Tejada. Arnold came out to challenge, but Tejada was able to sneak the ball past Arnold and into the back of the net for the early lead.
Illinois State fought off four TCU corner kicks in the first half and Newsom made three saves to help the Redbirds maintain the 1-0 lead heading into the half.
The Frogs came out on a mission in the second half. TCU earned an early corner kick. Clemmer's feed was on target, but Koch's shot sailed high.
Despite a strong push from the Frogs, the Redbirds were able to extend its lead to two with a goal in the 62nd minute. Tejada fed the ball to the left side of the goal and right to the foot of Hannah Leinert. Her shot was on target and the Redbirds had the insurance goal they needed.
"We have to fix some things that we saw, hopefully we can do that in the next two days and be ready for the game against North Texas on Sunday," said Bell.
TCU falls to 2-2-1 overall on the season. The Frogs will host North Texas Sunday afternoon at Noon. Sunday's contest against the Mean Green will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
