Portland State vs. No. 20 TCU
Sept. 24, 2011
Attendance: 33,825
Final: No. 20 TCU 55, Portland State 13
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the first half and his defense:
"The first half was not very emotional. We've got to get to where we play better and do the things we need to do. Once again, the No. 1 defense did well until the last drive. If we would have had the chance to review, I think that last drive would have been incomplete. We've got to keep growing the team up."
On the first half for the offense:
"Offensively, we came out slow. We've got to do a better job of it. We can't have second and third-and-long. We hurt ourselves with those penalties. We'll take a win, but I can tell you right now, we're going to have to play a lot better the two next two weeks to win with SMU and San Diego State coming up."
On Tank Carder's interception for touchdown:
"He caught it and ran it in. The good thing is he needed some confidence. The hand is still bothering him. That was good motivation for him right now."
On Waymon James' performance:
"I've told you guys all along that Waymon James and Matthew Tucker are just like ones. We have three ones. Both of those guys played like that today."
On improving to 3-1
"The key is you've got to be one point better. If we're able to make a field goal at Baylor, we're 4-0 right now. You've got to take it for what it is. We're 3-1. We haven't played our best football."
TCU sophomore quarterback Casey Pachall
On the slow start and 3-3 score late in the first half:
"We were moving the ball. We weren't having problems moving the ball, just little tiny mistakes. And we felt like in this game it was going to take one big play to get us rolling and it did."
On the spurt of TDs between the end of first half and start of second:
"Once we got the momentum, they weren't going to get it back, because really we couldn't be stopped at that point."
On the 66-yard TD pass to Josh Boyce:
"That was just a little screen play. We get it to him and basically get the ball in his hands and let him do what he can do. We haven't called that play much this year, but throughout the week we felt that the way their scheme is that we could successfully get some good yards on that play."
TCU sophomore defensive end Stansly Maponga
On what PSU did to keep the defense on the field in the first half:
"Basically doing a lot of draws, small draws. The quarterback is a good player, he's a great player. He was doing a lot of scrambles, because our corners were doing a great job covering the receivers and he had time to find holes scrambling. We just adjusted form there."
TCU senior linebacker Tank Carder
On the slow defensive start:
"We've been talking about that for three weeks now. We've been starting slow and we need to get moving quicker. Down the road, there are going to be some good teams that we will play that are going to get up on us too quick in the first half and we will not be able to recover from. That's definitely one thing we need to work on. It's not about them. It's what we've been doing. We need to start picking it up earlier in the game."
Portland State Head Coach Coach Nigel Burton
On getting off to a good start:
"We talked about the fact that we've got to be ourselves, and the personality of this football team is to run the ball first and use the drop back as a compliment. That's what we were able to do early in the game. We were up most of the first half. In the end, the offense didn't sure that much and we got a little cute with a call or two as opposed to just sticking with what we do, and that's squarely on the head football coach, that's on me."
On a play that made the difference:
"They ran a screen play and we got a little greedy and were going to see if we could get after the quarterback. A great team will make you pay and then we got a blitzkrieg there in a matter of three or four plays. Great teams will jump on you. That's what we talked about afterwards, if you want to be a great team, we have to learn to do that to other people."
On what his team can take from the game:
"The fact that if we just play to our personality, we can play that way with anybody. That's one of the best teams in America and we were able to run the football early, get three-and-outs, create turnovers and have big runs and passes. We know we can do those things. Now there's really not an excuse against anybody in our conference."
