SCOUTING RICE
The Owls feature seven starters and 16 letterwinners from a 2010 team that went 8-8-4 and reached the Conference USA Tournament. Rice is led by midfielder Hope Ward and her 13 points (three goals, seven assists) from a year ago. Junior defender Amy Beger earned all-conference honors from the backline last season.
Rice enters the weekend with a 1-1 record, coming off of a 3-0 victory against McNeese State at home Sunday. All three goals came in the second half from Beger, Annie Kadota and Alex Burton. The Owls opened the year with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Texas Tech in Lubbock on Aug. 19.
SERIES HISTORY
TCU holds a 4-3-1 advantage in the all-time series against Rice, including wins in each of the last two seasons. The Frogs claimed a 2-1 decision at Houston in 2010.
NO. 99 AT GARVEY-ROSENTHAL
Friday's matchup against the Owls will be the 99th game played on Jane Justin Field at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The Frogs have played well inside the friendly confines of their home venue since it was built in 2000, sporting a 6-1 home record in the inaugural season. TCU has continued to play well on its home turf ever since, boasting a 50-38-10 overall record.
LAST TIME OUT: VS. LAMAR AT HOME
TCU had to battle through triple-digit temperatures to shutout Lamar, 2-0, in a midday non-conference showdown on Aug. 21. The Horned Frogs improved to 1-1-0 for the 2011 season in front of a crowd of 1,459 spectators at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Freshman Natalie Werner tallied her first career goal and the first for the program in 2011. Redshirt freshman Brooke Kviz put the Frogs up 2-0 with a beautiful header to the far post. Freshman Alicen Wright posted her first career shutout, becoming the first newcomer to blank an opponent since Kelsey Walters shutdown Utah in 2007.
EXCUSED ABSENCE
Senior Kaylie Garcia missed the first week of the 2011 season, but she had a good reason. The senior was selected by the Mexican National Team to take part in the 2011 World University Games in Shenzen, China. After a two-week training camp in Mexico City, Garcia left with the team to China on Aug. 5, opening with three matches of pool play against Russia, North Korea and South Africa.
