Frog Tennis Honors Season Award Winners at Annual Banquet

FORT WORTH - The TCU tennis program celebrated the 2010-11 season while recognizing its season award winners Tuesday night at its annual banquet inside the club level of the Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex.
Both teams advanced to the championship round of the Mountain West Tennis Championships last weekend. The women's squad closed the year with a 13-11 record, while the men tallied a 13-13 mark. All individual awards were voted on by the TCU teams.
TCU recognized the contributions of four men and four women departing the program. On the men's side, TCU honored seniors Emanuel Brighiu, Cameron Nash, Zach Nichols and Christopher Price. Those leaving on the women's side are Maria Babanova, Idunn Hertzberg, Shalini Sahoo and Katariina Tuohimaa.
Tuohimaa and Brighiu took home top honors for the night, earning the Tut Bartzen MVP Award for their respective teams. Tuohimaa, a Helsinki, Finland, native, went 12-10 from the No. 1 singles spot this spring, including a 7-1 mark against conference opponents. She was named all-Mountain West in singles and doubles for the fourth time in her career.
Brighiu was 12-13 in singles for the Horned Frogs and 19-6 with doubles partner Price, all from the No. 1 spot. The Iasi, Romania, native had a season-high ranking of No. 72 in singles and No. 27 doubles. Additionally, Brighiu was the men's recipient of the Bayard H. Friedman Sportsmanship Award.
Other award winners on the women's team were as follows: Olivia Smith (Charles P. Ludwig Find A Way Award), Sahoo (Most Improved Award), Molly Welsh (Bayard H. Friedman Sportsmanship Award) and Babanova (Follett Academic Achievement Award).
On the men's side, Daniel Sanchez earned the Charles P. Ludwig Find A Way Award, Price was given the Most Improved Award and Nash, a Phi Beta Kappa member, was the recipient of the Follett Academic Achievement Award.
