FORT COLLINS, Colo. - TCU's women's tennis team landed three on the All-Mountain West Conference team, it was announced Wednesday.
Senior Katariina Tuohimaa and junior Gaby Mastromarino were named to the All-MWC singles team, while Tuohimaa and senior Maria Babanova were named to the All-MWC doubles team. Selections were chosen by a vote of the league's nine head coaches.
"I'm really happy for the kids to be honored," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "There are so many good players in our conference and this year it is especially deep. It's a great honor for the kids to get these awards."
Tuohimaa was named to both the All-MWC singles and doubles team for the fourth time in her TCU career. The Helsinki, Finland, native tallied an 11-9 singles record this spring, including a 7-1 mark against opponents from the MWC. She played all of her MWC matches at the No. 1 position.
In doubles, Tuohimaa and Babanova were honored for their play late in the season. Though playing only five matches together, the Horned Frog tandem racked up a 4-1 record at the No. 1 doubles spot, including a 3-1 mark against league foes.
The All-Mountain West selection was the first in Babanova's four-year career. Tuohimaa earned the All-MWC distinction with her third different doubles partner. She was honored with senior Idunn Hertzberg in 2007-08 and with former Frog Kayla Duncan in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Mastromarino was also chosen for the first time in her career wearing the Purple and White. The Tequesta, Fla., native went 13-5 from spots Nos. 2 through 6 this spring and was 6-2 against MWC competition. She strung together a seven-match winning streak in singles during the spring.
TCU begins play at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships at 3:30 p.m., CT on Thursday against BYU. The Frogs have made seven-straight NCAA Championships appearances and have won the past two MWC tournament championships.
