Comeback Not Enough as Frogs Fall, 5-2

FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team found itself in an unfamiliar place Saturday, dropping a 5-2 decision to Utah for its first loss in five matches.
"I thought we competed hard, they were just a little better than us today," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "I thought we battled in some tough matches, but just got too far behind early. There's a lot to be said for winning at No. 1 singles today. Katariina Tuohimaa is really starting to play her best tennis."
Tuohimaa was a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner at the expense of Utah's Anastasia Putilina, who came into the match ranked No. 82 in the nation. The Helsinki, Finland, product picked up her third win of the season over a ranked opponent.
Junior Gaby Mastromarino scored TCU's other point Saturday with her 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Lucia Kovarcikova at No. 3 singles. The Tequesta, Fla., native has rallied off five-straight singles wins to improve to 9-2 during the spring.
Utah jumped on the Frogs early in the match, picking up wins in all three singles matches. TCU was unable to get anything going in the early match and fell 8-3, 8-3 and 8-4 at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
The Frogs dropped tough singles matches at Nos. 2 and 6, with Federica Denti falling to the 108th-ranked Evgenia Kryuchkova 6-2, 7-6 (2) at the No. 2 spot. At No. 6, Shalini Sahoo fell to Lexi Provancha, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
With the win, Utah improved to 8-8 and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. TCU fell to 6-7, 1-1. The Frogs return to action Sunday morning in a 10 a.m., match with New Mexico.
