FORT WORTH - The No. 65 TCU women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and dropped only one set in singles en route to a 7-0 win over New Mexico at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
TCU's last 7-0 triumph in Mountain West Conference play came a year ago when it picked up a sweep against Colorado State.
"I'm happy with the way the kids played," TCU coach Dave Boreli said. "I'm really proud of the way they bounced back after a tough match yesterday. That's a sign of the kind of kids I have. I really think we've got a chance to compete for the conference title. We've got a tough match coming up with SMU with a chance to pull an upset."
The Horned Frogs jumped on New Mexico early, scoring quick wins in all three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg struck first for TCU, dropping Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson, 8-2.
Gaby Mastromarino and Olivia Smith followed suit, grabbing an 8-1 win of their own at the expense of Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva to clinch the point for the Purple and White. Soon after, TCU's No. 1 doubles tandem of Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa picked up an 8-2 win of their own over Michaela Bezdickova and Nikolina Grbac.
As singles began, Hertzberg got right to work for the Frogs with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michaela Oldani at the No. 5 slot to make it 2-0 in favor of TCU. Babanova made it 3-0 with her 6-0, 6-1 downing of Eggleston at No. 6 singles.
Smith put it away for TCU when she was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over New Mexico's Richardson on the No. 4 court. Denti polished off her seventh win of the spring soon after with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
Mastromarino extended her singles winning streak to seven matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Villanueva at No. 2 singles. The Tequesta, Fla., native improved to 10-2 during the spring and has won matches at Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles.
With the match in hand for TCU, Tuohimaa won a third-set super tiebreaker for a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-0) triumph at No. 1 singles to put the finishing touches on the Frog sweep. The Helsinki, Finland, native is out to a 3-0 start against MWC foes.
TCU improved to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in MWC action with the win, while the Lobos fell to 7-10, 0-3. The Frogs return to action Tuesday when they travel to SMU for a 2 p.m., matchup.
