FORT WORTH - TCU's women's tennis team dropped a gritty 5-2 decision to No. 19 Oklahoma on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs fell to 1-4 with the loss, while OU improved to 7-2. The match was moved indoors due to cool temperatures and high winds.
"I was proud of the way we competed," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "We were serving to win the doubles point. They are a very good team, so it shows us just how good we can be."
OU was able to capture the doubles point, but not without stiff competition from the Frogs. TCU's No. 1 duo of Federica Denti and Katariina Tuohimaa picked up a 9-8 (4) win over 62nd-ranked Ana Constantinescu and Alice Radu of OU.
At No. 2 doubles, the Frog tandem of Gaby Mastromarino and Olivia Smith were serving for the match against OU's Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie, but ultimately fell 9-8 (3).
Tara Eckel and Marie-Pier Huet were 8-3 winners for the Sooners over Maria Babanova and Idunn Hertzberg at No. 3 doubles.
The Sooners extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, respectively. Radu won 6-4, 6-3 over Smith at No. 2, while Lancaster picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sahoo.
The Frogs would make it interesting, though, with wins at Nos. 1 and 4 singles. Tuohimaa notched her second singles win of the spring when she disposed of No. 79 Constantinescu by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (3). It was the first win over a ranked opponent this season for the Helsinki, Finland native.
Hertzberg continued TCU's charge when she battled back from down a set to win 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 over OU's Huet. The Oslo, Norway, native trailed in the second set before coming back to win and make the score 3-2 in favor of OU.
Maria Kalashnikova clinched the match for the Sooners with a 6-3, 6-2 win over TCU's Babanova at No. 6 singles.
OU earned its fifth point in the longest match of the day when the 124th-ranked Ritchie earned a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) win at the hands of TCU's Mastromarino at the No. 3 slot.
The Frogs waste no time returning to action with Wake Forest visiting the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on March 7. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
