FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's rifle team is one of eight teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships, hosted by Columbus State this year. The championships are slated to be held March 11-12. The Horned Frogs will attempt to defend their National Championship.
"The team just finished their best ever regular season and I look for them to continue to deliver good, solid performances in Georgia," said head coach Karen Monez. "They are excited about another opportunity to compete on the national stage."
TCU has had a tremendous amount of success in the National Championships the last four seasons. They reached the pinnacle in 2010 as they took home the team National Championship as well as the Smallbore National Championship. They have notched two fifth-place finishes (2007 and 2009) and a third place finish in 2008. Additionally, Sarah Scherer took home the individual smallbore national championship.
The Horned Frogs are riding a tremendous regular season performance into the championships. TCU has not lost a match in over a year, a streak of 23 straight matches. The five shooters headed to Columbus for TCU are Sarah Scherer, Sarah Beard, Caitlin Morrissey, Mattie Brogdon and Catherine Green.
The participating field of eight includes Alaska-Fairbanks, West Virginia, Kentucky, Army, Navy, Murray State and Jacksonville State. Ohio State, Memphis, Nevada, Nebraska and UTEP will send individual participants to the competition.
Hosted by Columbus State University, the championships will be held March 11-12 in Columbus, Ga., at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center on the Columbus State campus and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning.
The top eight teams in both the smallbore three-position and air rifle events were selected based on the average of the three highest regular-season aggregate scores with no more than one match at any given site. The average of the three highest scores was added to the aggregate scores from the designated qualifiers to determine the top eight teams.
Individual and team competitions in smallbore three-position (60 shots) will be held Friday, March 11. Individual and team competitions in air rifle (60 shots) will be held Saturday, March 12. The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team total scores into one aggregate score for each institution.
