Horned Frogs Roll Over UTSA Monday Night, 65-30

Simply put, TCU suffocated the Roadrunners Monday night on the defensive end of the court, forcing 24 turnovers, while only allowing UTSA to total eight made buckets the entire night, which resulted in the fourth fewest points by an opponent in school history. The Horned Frogs' defense was cranked up the entire night, rocketing UTSA to the tune of holding the Roadrunners to only 13.3 percent from the floor, which ranks No. 2 all-time in school history for lowest field goal percentage by an opponent.
When it was all said and done, TCU recorded a 28-10 advantage in points off turnovers, while posting a 14-2 advantage in fast break points.
During each half, TCU, who is now 1-1 on the year, continued to force the Roadrunners, now 0-2 on the season, into bad shots. In the second half alone, the Purple and White held UTSA to only 17 points, which is tied for the sixth-fewest second half points by an opposition in school history. In the first half, the Horned Frogs held UTSA scoreless for a total of 9 minutes, 28 seconds of play, which resulted in the Roadrunner only netting a total of 13 points the entire opening frame, the 10th fewest first half points scored by an opponent.
Freshman Jazz Parker led TCU Monday night, scoring 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Sophomore Latricia Lovings was the only other Frog in double-figures, scoring a career-high 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor, which helped TCU hold a 32-8 advantage in the paint. Lovings also chipped in with seven boards and four blocks on the night.
Ashley Spalette paced UTSA Monday, scoring 13 points on only 4-of-16 shooting from the field. No other Roadrunner scored in double-figures, with the next closest being Mannasha Bell with six points.
The Frogs, who opened the half on a 23-6 run, broke open the second period running and gunning as Antoinette Thompson found a streaking Natalie Ventress for an easy fast break bucket to make the score 28-14 early on in the half. The trio then proceeded to steal the show pushing the Frog lead to 32-16, scoring the next four points for the Purple and White, which included a nice dish and score off a steal at the 17:14 mark of the half.
By the time the game hit 11 minutes to go, Chelsea Prince would dial up a 42-18 lead for the Frogs, dropping a three off an assist by Delisa Gross. The Frogs would put it on a cruise control the rest of the way as TCU hit three-consecutive three's with a little over 3 minutes to go to increase the lead to 35 points and never look back, winning 65-30 Friday night.
The Frogs and Lady Roadrunners battled back-and-fourth early in the contest until Prince dropped a triple from the top of the key to make the score 7-4 early.
The Frogs went up 12-4 at the 8:59 mark of the half when Parker connected on a tough-three point play inside the lane. The bucket and continuation were the Houston natives' first career points as a Horned Frog. Fellow freshman Ashley Colbert increased the TCU lead to 14-4 a few moments later, scoring on a put-back in the lane. The tandem would continue to carry the Frogs early, connecting on the next four points to move the TCU lead to 18-4 midway through the period.
Overall, TCU held UTSA scoreless for a total of 9 minutes, 28 seconds of play in the first half, while forcing the Roadrunners into eight turnovers during that stretch. The Frogs stifling defense punished UTSA during the opening frame as the Roadrunners opened the game going 2-of-24 from the floor. In total, UTSA only made four shots during first half action as the Purple and White held the Roadrunners to a grand total of 4-of-33 during first half play.
During the first half alone, TCU's pressure defense held UTSA to the tenth-fewest first half points allowed in school history. In all, the two teams combined to post the fifth fewest combined first half points.
Following a back-and-fourth stretch of play between both squads, the Frogs went down low and found Lovings for a jumper in the lane with a little over 2 minutes to go in the half to bring the score to 22-13. The sophomore then put together a nice running jumper with time running down in the half to bring the halftime score to 26-13.
TCU will return to action Thursday night at SMU. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
