FORT WORTH - TCU's Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith continued their run through the doubles draw Monday at USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship on the courts of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The TCU tandem dropped top-seeded Edyta Cieplucha and Marta Lesniak of SMU, 8-5 to punch its ticket to the championship match. Nichols and Smith jumped to an early lead and were able to stop SMU's chances at gaining momentum with key break points and wins in lengthy games.
Sixth-seeded Nichols and Smith face Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun Wen in Tuesday's championship match. First serve is set for 10 a.m., against the No. 2-seed Aggie squad.
"I'm really proud of the girls, especially considering how much they've been playing," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "Win or lose tomorrow, I'm very happy with where we're at as a team. Doubles is going to be very important for us and we're showing that we have a lot of depth."
Nichols and Smith are now 6-1 during the fall as doubles partners with their only loss coming in the season-opening Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. During their run at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals, the duo has knocked off two higher-seeded opponents.
