FORT WORTH - TCU's Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith continued their solid play Sunday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship on the courts of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frog tandem knocked off fourth-seeded Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Noel Scott of Texas, 9-7, in a tough match that saw momentum change hands on multiple occasions. With the win, Nichols and Smith improved to 5-1 as doubles partners during the fall.
No. 6-seed Nichols and Smith will take on the tournament's top seed, Edyta Cieplucha and Marta Lesniak of SMU, in the championship semifinals. First serve is set for 10 a.m., Monday on the Bartzen Varsity Courts at the Friedman Tennis Center.
"That was a good win for them because they haven't played much this fall," TCU coach Dave Borelli said. "I'm proud of the way they continued to fight."
In singles play, TCU freshman Simona Parajova saw her run at the event come to an end after a gritty loss to fourth-seeded Diana Nakic of Baylor. Nakic was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 winner, but not without some resolve from Parajova.
"I was happy with the way she played," Borelli said. "She doesn't have as much experience and I think that was the difference in the match."
