
Garcia Lifts TCU To Victory Over Lady Demons

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Junior Kaylie Garcia netted the gamewinner in the 80th minute on Sunday to lead TCU to a 4-3 decision over Northwestern State at the Demon Soccer Complex.Garcia put the Horned Frogs ahead for good in the match late in the contest off an assist by Chelsea Cody. The goal for Garcia, which marked her third goal of the season, capped a furious comeback for the Frogs, who scored three second half goals to capture the victory. Overall, TCU, who played the majority of the game with only 10 players on the field, only allowed the Lady Demons one shot attempt during the second period.
Following a goal by Northwestern State's Kali Hellinghausen, sophomore Kim Castleberry appeared to have tied the match at 1-1, but her shot was saved by Jessica Danku to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Lady Demons. A few moments later, senior Nikki Wilbur netted her first goal of the season, scoring off a corner kick by freshman Kaitlin Hellmann. On the play, Hellmann played the ball into the box where Wilbur was able to boot it past Danku from 5 feet out.
Jordan Calhoun tried to give the Purple and White the lead in the 25th minute, but Danku stopped the ball before it could find the back of the net. Sophomore Kira Michelson-Bartlett came up with a big save in the 27th minute, stopping Rachel O'Steen on a penalty kick, but O'Steen followed her own shot and was able to put the Lady Demons back on top off the rebound.
NWSU took a two-goal lead halfway through the first half when Kayla King just beat Michelson-Bartlett on a breakaway. Calhoun tried to rally the Horned Frogs following the goal, connecting on two-consecutive shots in the 33rd and 48th minute.
Kristen Halverson brought the Frogs within one right before the halftime break, scoring her first goal of the season off an assist by Calhoun.
Following the 15 minute intermission, TCU got right to work, scoring in the 48th minute. Calhoun tied the contest at 3-3 off a cross from Cody. With the goal, Calhon needs only two more goals to become TCU's all-time leading goal scorer in school history.
The Frogs continued on the offensive attack following Calhoun's goal, firing four-straight shots, including one by Castleberry that hit the post. Alex Mechalske appeared to have given the Purple and White the lead in the 64th minute, but Danku saved the shot.
Garcia finished the TCU rally in the 80th minute, scoring the gamewinner off an assist from Cody from the left side of the field to secure the 4-3 victory at the Demon Soccer Complex.
For the match, TCU outshot Northwestern State, 21-9, including 11-1 in the second half. The Horned Frogs also held a slight advantage in corner kicks on Sunday, 6-5. Calhoun led the offensive attack, netting one goal, while also assisting on another. Castleberry also had a solid day, posting four shot attempts.
On defense, the Frogs were simply dominating in the second half, blanking the Lady Demons, while holding them to one shot attempt. Michelson-Bartlett and senior Kelsey Walters combined to save three shots, while Danku posted six saves.
With the win, TCU improved to 3-2-1 on the year, while Northwestern State dropped to 2-4-0.
The Horned Frogs will take on nationally ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday, Sept. 12. The match, which will be show nationally on The Mtn., is set to take place at 1 p.m. CT at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
