TCU missed on several scoring opportunities throughout the match as Cowgirl goalkeeper Adrianna Franch came up with four big saves to keep the Frogs off the board. For the contest, Oklahoma State held a slight advantage in shot attempts, 19-17, in front of 1,616 spectators at Jane Justin Field.
"This was a tough game because it was not a 4-0 game by any means," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "We gave up some goals and got behind, which really put us in a bad position. We were much better in a lot of areas today and I think despite the score, this was a step towards competing for a conference championship. We just have to keep our focus and continue to move forward."
Junior Katie Taylor appeared to have given the Purple and White the early 1-0 lead off a corner kick by Alex Mechalske, but her header from inside the box sailed wide of the back of the net. TCU continued on the offensive attack a few moments later as Kristen Halverson fired away, but couldn't crack the scoring column.
At the 15:09 mark of the first half, Kaylie Garcia took a cross from Jordan Calhoun and blasted a ball from just outside the box, but once again the ball sailed wide to keep the score at 0-0 during the early portion of the game.
Following an own goal in the 19th minute that made the score 1-0 in favor of Oklahoma State, Kim Castleberry gave the Frogs' a chance to even the score at 1-1. On the play, Mechalske threaded the ball into the McKinney native deep in the box, but Franch came up with a big save to keep TCU off the board in the 21st minute.
With OSU clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the half, Calhoun and Taylor both missed on scoring opportunities. In the 40th minute, senior Jackie Torda tried to even the score, but her shot was wide following a pass from Calhoun.
Coming out of the halftime break, the two teams traded possessions for the majority of the half. The Frogs' Chelsey Wilgenburg appeared to have tied the contest in the 53rd minute, but Franch blocked the ball before it could cross the back of the net. A few moments later, Calhoun almost netted the game-tying score, missing from the left side of the field.
Cheryl Martin, a senior from Las Vegas, continue the offensive attack in the 59th minute, heading the ball towards the goal, but Franch was able to punch the ball out to keep the Purple and White off the scoreboard.
In the 65th minute, Megan Marchesano increased the OSU lead to 2-0, scoring off a deflection. The OSU lead would move to 3-0 a few moments later when the ball took an unfortunate bounce off a TCU defender and landed into the back of the net.
Freshman Kaitlin Hellmann tried to put the Horned Frogs on the board in the 75th minute, but watched as her shot sailed wide. Garcia continued to move the Frogs down the field in the 77th minute, but couldn't connect, missing high over the top half of the goal.
Taylor Mathews added a late goal for Oklahoma State to tally the final points of the day off an assist by Marchesano.
Taylor led TCU on offense, posting four shot attempts, including several close chances against the nationally ranked Cowgirls. Calhoun and Castleberry chipped in with three shots on Sunday, respectively.
Kira Michelson-Bartlett recorded five saves, while Franch posted four against an attacking Horned Frog offense.
With the loss, TCU moved to 3-3-1 on the season, while Oklahoma State improved to 6-1-0 on the year. The match, which was shown on The Mtn., marked the first ever nationally televised home contest in program history.
"We had a few unfortunate bounces today, but I think we are on the right path towards our ultimate goal of winning a conference championship. We have been working so hard and I think we are coming together as a team," said Nikki Wilbur.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action at No. 20 Memphis on Friday, Sept. 17. Start time is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
