The Horned Frogs constantly pressured Texas State on Sunday afternoon, but couldn't place the ball into the back of the net in front of the third largest crowd in stadium history. Overall, TCU held an 18-5 shot advantage in the second half, while also posting an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks for the match. The Purple and White had 13 different players record shot attempts at Jane Justin Field, including six by junior Jordan Calhoun. Texas State goalkeeper Lauren Frazier made five saves on the day, while Kelsey Walters recorded two.
Texas State, who most recently made its fourth trip to the NCAA's in 2008 and has claimed two-straight conference titles, got on the board first when Britney Curry barely beat Walters from the right side of the box early in the match.
Following the goal, TCU appeared to have tied the game at 1-1 when Jackie Torda received a cross from Kristen Halverson at the 7:08 mark of the first half. On the play, Halverson played the ball across the box to Torda, who just missed to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Bobcats.
A few moments later, Kim Castleberry got into the mix, booming a shot towards the right side of the goal, but Frazier saved the ball before it could find the back of the net. The sophomore from McKinney tried one more time in the 14th minute off a pass from Kaylie Garcia, but Frazier made a one handed diving save to keep the Purple and White off the board again.
In the 28th minute, Taylor Kelley increased the Bobcat lead to 2-0, scoring on a deflected ball off the post.
Trailing 2-0 midway through the first half, TCU continued to pressure Texas State, but couldn't light up the scoreboard. Both Castleberry and freshman Brittany Slyman had consecutive chances, but were denied by an aggressive Bobcat defense.
In the 32nd minute, Slyman found herself deep in Texas State territory, but her shot was stepped in front of by a Bobcat defender.
Late in the half, freshman Kaitlin Hellmann played a beautiful ball to a streaking Slyman, but Frazier slid in front of the Frisco native, saving the ball before Slyman could connect.
Calhoun, who only needs one more goal to become TCU's all-time leading goal scorer, came out of the halftime break firing away, but watched as her shot in the 47th minute sailed high.
Taylor Person added an insurance goal for the Bobcats in the 48th minute, scoring from 25 yards out.
Following the goal, the Frogs got right to work when Chelsey Wilgenburg missed on two-straight chances inside the box. On her second attempt, Wilgenburg almost slid the ball into the bottom half of the goal, but a Texas State defender stepped in front of the junior's shot to derail the ball back to Frazier.
Halfway through the second half, Slyman tried to ignite the Horned Frog offense off a pass from Castleberry, but her shot sailed high to keep the score at 3-0. At the 73:07 mark of the second half, Halverson connected on a header following a corner kick by Alex Mechalske, just missing. Hellmann followed up the deflected ball, but had her shot blocked by a Texas State defender.
Following a free kick, Katie Taylor tried one last time to put the Frogs on the board, but Frazier made another impressive save, punching the ball out to preserve the 3-0 victory for Texas State.
With the loss, TCU moved to 5-5-1 on the year, while the Bobcats improved to 6-4-0.
The Horned Frogs will open conference play next Friday night at San Diego State. Start time is set for 6 p.m. CT.
