FORT WORTH—The TCU men's tennis team travels to Waco, Texas, this weekend for the annual HEB Baylor Invitational. The event will be hosted by the home Bears Friday through Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Seven of the 10 players on the TCU roster will open their fall seasons this weekend. Senior Zach Nichols and junior Paul Chappell competed last weekend at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, while junior Jack Seider will sit out the entire fall campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.
Of the Frogs in action this weekend, eight are scheduled to compete in both singles and doubles: Nichols, Emanuel Brighiu, Paul Chappell, Sören Goritzka, Slah Mbarek, Cameron Nash, Christopher Price and Daniel Sanchez. Sophomore Santiago Centeno will play only singles.
TCU will feature the following doubles pairings: Brighiu/Price; Mbarek/Sanchez; Chappell/Nichols; and Goritzka/Nash. Brighiu and Price will carry the ITA's No. 23 national preseason ranking with them into the tournament.
Sanchez, the lone true newcomer to this year's Horned Frog roster, will see his first competition in a TCU uniform. A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Sanchez transferred from Mississippi State in the offseason after leading the Bulldogs with an 11-4 singles record in dual-match play last spring.
The tournament will consist of a 64-player singles A draw and a 32-player singles B draw, as well as a 32-team doubles A draw and a 16-team doubles B draw. There will be consolation matches for flight A and B singles.
This weekend's appearance marks the fifth straight season the Frogs have traveled to the Baylor Invitational. This year's field once again is loaded with strong competition. Other schools that plan to send players to the event include: Air Force, Auburn, Baylor, Idaho, Maryland, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Rice, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, UL-Lafayette, UT Arlington and Texas-Pan American.
Joining TCU's entries in the singles draw are five players who were ranked among the nation's top-30 players in the preseason: Auburn's Tim Puetz (No. 11), Texas Tech's Raony Carvalho (No. 16), Texas A&M's Jeff Dadamo (No. 22), Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar (No. 24) and Baylor's John Peers (No. 28).
In doubles, Auburn's Tim Puetz and Alex Stamchev (No. 5) and Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar and Raony Carvalho (No. 27) will join TCU's Brighiu and Price as ranked tandems.
Recaps for each day of competition will be posted to GoFrogs.com. More information on the tournament, which includes draws and results, can be found at the link at the top of this page.
