
TCU Comes Up Short Against Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - TCU pressured Texas Tech for the majority of the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Red Raiders used three first half goals to drop TCU 3-0 Friday night in front of 1,356 spectators at the John Walker Soccer Complex.Early in the first half, Jordan Calhoun tried to connect from 20 yards out, but her shot from the middle of the field sailed wide of the goal.
Following a goal by Texas Tech, TCU pressured the Red Raider defense, but couldn't find the back of the net. Texas Tech's Taylor Lytle increased the lead to 2-0 at the 24:53 mark of the first half, but the Frogs came right back as freshman Kristen Barg fired towards the goal, but her shot sailed wide.
Halfway through the first half, Kaylie Garcia received a pass deep in the box and appeared to bring the Frogs within one, but her shot was blocked by a sliding Red Raider defender to keep the Purple and White off the board. Texas Tech's Jessica Fuston notched her second goal of the day late in the half to increase the Red Raiders halftime lead to 3-0.
Following the break, the Frogs pressured the Red Raider defense, possessing the ball early and often to begin the second half, but couldn't crack the scoring column.
In the 61st minute of the match, Jackie Torda, a 2009 all-conference selection, passed the ball to a streaking Kaitlin Hellmann, but the freshman couldn't put the Frogs on the board.
Kelly Johnson came right back halfway through the second half, but her shot from outside the box sailed wide. Torda continued on the offensive attack a few moments later, but watched as her shot went wide of the goal. The Frogs had another chance in the 73rd minute, but Texas Tech goalkeeper Colleen Pitts came up with a big save to keep TCU off the scoreboard.
Garcia tried to rally the Horned Frogs in the 81st minute, but her shot from inside the box was saved by Pitts.
For the match, Torda and Garcia led the TCU offense with two shots apiece, while four others chipped in with one, respectively. Kelsey Walters, who held Texas Tech scoreless the entire second half, collected three saves on Friday night.
With the loss, TCU moved to 0-1-0 on the season, while Texas Tech improved to 1-0-0.
The Frogs will resume action on Sunday against Texas Southern. Competition is set for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
