ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The TCU women's basketball team opened up its eight-day summer trip to Western Canada Thursday night with a 100-61 victory over the University of Fraser Valley at the Cascades' Envision Athletic Center. The game was the first of seven exhibitions the Frogs are set to play during their tour of the Vancouver area.
The contest, which featured four 12-minutes periods instead of the typical two 20-minute halves, saw the Frogs run out to a 64-32 lead by intermission. TCU shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half before coasting to victory in the final 24 minutes. The squad was strong on the glass, finishing with a 58-48 rebounding advantage. The Cascades were forced into shooting only 32.8 percent from the field and 34 turnovers.
Senior Helena Sverrisdottir, an honorable-mention All-America selection a season ago and the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, led TCU with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Sverrisdottir drilled 5-of-9 shots from 3-point range and pulled down six rebounds.
Fellow senior Emily Carter, a 2010 First-Team All-MWC pick, chipped in 17 points while making 7-of-12 attempts from the floor. Senior Rachel Rentschler and sophomore DeLisa Gross both added 13 points each. Junior Antoinette Thompson paced TCU on the glass with 12 rebounds, while sophomore Starr Crawford fell just short of a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. Crawford collected four blocked shots.
Four freshmen saw the floor in their first game action for TCU. Briesha Wynn totaled eight points and four assists in 15 minutes of action, while Aron Garcia had two points and eight rebounds. Meagan Henson dished out three helpers, and Jacqueline Chandler made a pair of steals.
TCU will return to the hardwood Friday night with its second of its two exhibition games against Fraser Valley.
