ATHENS, Ga.—TCU's doubles team of Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Women's Division I Individual Championships Thursday at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The duo's victory gives the Frogs a Sweet 16 pairing for the sixth straight year.
Duncan and Tuohimaa, who both were making their career debuts at the NCAA Individual Championships, posted a win over Northwestern's 24th-ranked team of Elena Chernyakova and Lauren Lui in straight sets in the bracket's opening round, 7-6 (4), 6-2. The Frogs, listed at No. 46 in the most recent release of the ITA's national doubles rankings, improved to 20-9 overall when playing together in 2009-10, including a 15-6 mark this spring. The victory also marked the tandem's seventh in eight matches against ranked opponents.
"We played a nice, steady match against a very good team," head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "It was a good way to start off the tournament. The next round will also be very difficult. We will have to play well to be in each match here, and we look forward to tomorrow's challenge."
The victory kept alive a string of TCU success in doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships. The Frogs have sent a duo past the first round of the tournament each of the last six seasons, including a pair of Final Four appearances by Ana Cetnik and Story Tweedie-Yates in 2005 and Cenik and Anna Sydorska in 2007. Both semifinals appearances were logged in the NCAA tournament's last two trips to Athens.
Next up for Duncan and Tuohimaa is a Friday meeting in the Round of 16 with Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik. TCU faced the Irish duo, the bracket's No. 3 overall seed, earlier this spring, with Nina Munch-Soegaard and Maria Babanova dropping an 8-4 decision back on March 31.
