ATHENS, Ga.—TCU senior Nina Munch-Soegaard was eliminated from singles play at the NCAA Women's Division I Individual Championships Wednesday at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The match put a close to her outstanding four-year career as a Horned Frog All-American.
Munch-Soegaard, ranked 55th nationally, dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to No. 40 Bianca Eichkorn of Miami during Round-of-64 action. The setback put Munch-Soegaard's season record at 14-13, while she concluded her career with a 95-46 mark, which is only one win shy of TCU's top-5 all-time winningest players. Eichkorn continued her outstanding spring season that has seen the Hurricane rack up a perfect 24-0 record and 25-match winning streak while playing the No. 2 position in the Miami lineup.
"Nina has had a storied career at TCU," head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "We are all looking forward to watching her play in the pros. She is everything you want a Frog to be, and it has been an honor and a pleasure to be her coach for four years. I'm really going to miss her."
A native of Amarillo, Texas, Munch-Soegaard earned an at-large bid to the singles bracket for her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Individual Championships. She helped the Frogs earn their seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Team Championships earlier this season, as the squad won its sixth Mountain West Conference title in five seasons by storming through the conference tournament.
Munch-Soegaard earned an automatic berth and No. 16 national seed to the NCAA singles competition a season ago during her All-America junior season. The Frog finished as the fourth singles All-American in TCU history, joining Nicole Leimbach (2006), Story Tweedie-Yates (2005) and Rene Simpson (1988). She also captured the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Singles Championship and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor.
The two-time Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Player of the Year led TCU in singles victories in both of her first two years on campus, including a 21-6 dual-match record in 2007 that helped earn her Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year honors.
The NCAA Individual Championships continue tomorrow with the start of the women's and men's 32-team doubles brackets. Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa will compete in women's first-round action against Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova and Lauren Lui, while the pairing of Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price will open men's doubles competition against USC's Robert Farah and Steve Johnson. Both of TCU's matches will begin no earlier than 2 p.m. ET.
