FORT WORTH—The TCU women's basketball team honored its 2009-10 season award winners at the Fast Breakers' annual postseason banquet Sunday evening at the Brown-Lupton University Union on the TCU campus.
Six major awards were handed out during the event, which also included a season highlight video and special recognition of the three-player senior class of Chantelle John, TK LaFleur and Eboni Mangum.
The award winners included: junior Helena Sverrisdottir, Player of the Year; junior Emily Carter, Offensive MVP; senior Eboni Mangum, Defensive MVP; freshman Starr Crawford, Freshman of the Year; and senior TK LaFleur, Janice Dziuk Award. Sverrisdottir also took home the team's top academic honor, the Laurie Fetter Academic Award, after posting a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the fall semester.
Sverrisdottir earned Player of the Year honors after being named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and an honorable-mention All-American by both the Associated Press and Women's Basketball Coaches Association. She was the lone player in the MWC to rank among the league's top-15 players in scoring (13.6 ppg), rebounds (6.7 rpg), assists (5.2 apg) and steals (2.2 spg). Additionally, Sverrisdottir became the first player in program history to compile 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career.
Another outstanding season highlighted by first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors helped Carter claim TCU's Offensive Player of the Year Award. She led the Frogs in scoring average at 14.4 points per game and placed her name in TCU single-season record book for both 3-point (41.5%-No. 4) and free-throw (87.4%-No. 2) shooting percentage.
Mangum, in addition to ranking fifth among Frogs with an 8.1-point scoring average, gave the squad a big boost on the defensive end of the court throughout the season. She ranked second among Frogs in steals and often was the squad's designated stopper assigned to guard the opposing team's top offensive threat. Mangum's success was noticed by the MWC coaches, as she was named to the league's All-Defensive Team.
Crawford, named the team's Freshman of the Year, ranked as one of the nation's best freshmen in 2009-10. She started 30-of-31 games and averaged just under a double-double at 9.8 points and 8.8 boards per contest. Her most important contributions came on the glass for a squad that searched for a much-needed boost in the area during the offseason. She pulled down 274 rebounds, the fifth-best single-season total in program history. Crawford also was an honorable-mention All-MWC selection.
LaFleur earned TCU's Janice Dziuk Award, which is named for the third-leading scorer and rebounder in TCU history. The honor recognizes a player each year who provides leadership and exudes great effort both on and off the basketball floor. LaFleur proved her leadership midway through the season by vacating her position as a starter in order to serve as a reserve for a team looking for a scoring punch off the bench. She finished the season ranked third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) while placing her name on the All-MWC Third Team.
