FORT WORTH—TCU junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir earned honorable-mention All-America honors from the Associated Press Tuesday. She became only the third player in program history to receive some form of All-America accolade.
Sverrisdottir, who is also a finalist for the WBCA/State Farm All-America Team, was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year this past season while helping the Frogs win their first MWC regular-season championship. The squad advanced to play in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.
A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Sverrisdottir led TCU in assists (5.2 apg) and steals (2.2 spg) in 2009-10 while ranking second in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). She was the only Mountain West Conference player listed among the league's top-15 individuals in each category. Her 161 assists marked the third-best individual total in school history, and she will enter her senior season as the only TCU player ever to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career.
Former Frogs previously reaching All-America status include Sandora Irvin, a consensus first-team selection as a senior in 2005 and honorable-mention choice as a junior, and Adrianne Ross, an honorable-mention AP pick as a junior in 2004.
Sverrisdottir was joined on the honorable mention list by fellow Mountain West Conference player Kalee Whipple (Utah). The AP also honored three other players from programs in the state of Texas: Baylor center Britney Griner (second team) and Texas A&M forwards Danielle Adams and Tanisha Smith (honorable mention).
