FORT WORTH—TCU junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir was one of 52 players across the nation honored as All-Region by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Tuesday. The group will soon be cut to a list of 40 finalists, of which 10 will be selected for the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team.
Sverrisdottir, named last week as the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, was joined by three other players on the All-Region 7 Team: Shanavia Dowdell (Louisiana Tech), Jené Morris (San Diego State) and Jaleesa Ross (Fresno State).
The 40 finalists for the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team can come from any region. The group of finalists will be released on Tuesday, March 23, while the final All-America squad will be announced on Saturday, April 3, during Women's Final Four weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Sverrisdottir leads TCU this season in assists (5.2 apg) and steals (2.2 spg) while ranking second in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). She is the only Mountain West Conference player to rank among the league's top-15 individuals in each category. Her solid season has already placed her alongside the greats in program history. She is the first TCU player ever to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career, and she has climbed into at least the top-6 position in each category on TCU's career charts.
Sverrisdottir will lead TCU into its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 years this weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. The ninth-seeded Frogs open the tourney Saturday, March 20, with a 2:30 p.m. ET matchup against No. 8 seed Dayton. The game will be televised live by ESPN2.
