Frogs Fall to MWC Leader San Diego State, 173-123

FORT WORTH - Sophomore Sabine Rasch set a TCU record in the 100-freestyle and Maria Paula Alvarez won two events, but Mountain West Conference leader San Diego State was too much and swam to a 173-123 triumph Saturday at the TCU University Recreation Center Natatorium.
Rasch won both sprint freestyle events, with the exclamation point coming in the 100-freestyle. The Luckenwalde, Germany, native did not disappoint in her dual debut for the Horned Frogs, setting a school-record when she touched the wall in 50.75.
She added another win in the 50-freestyle with a 23.36. That time is good for fourth on TCU's all-time performance list.
"To set a school record this early in the season is huge," TCU coach Richard Sybesma said. "I'm really proud of Sabine Rasch and Maria Paula Alvarez. As a team, we competed really well against what I think will be the conference champion in San Diego State."
Alvarez claimed wins in the 500-freestyle and 1000-freestyle. The senior from Cali, Colombia dominated the 1000-free, finishing in 10:13.27, nearly 14 seconds ahead of second place.
In the 500-free, Alvarez notched a thrilling 4:56.28 to finish just ahead of SDSU's Kelly Marquenie, who touched the wall in 4:56.86. Alvarez's final 50-yard split of 28.06 was three-tenths of a second faster than Marquenie's final 50 yards.
TCU's other event win came in the 400-freestyle relay, the meet's final event. The Frog team of Rasch, Alvarez, Katie Scarsella and Parris Schoppa clocked a 3:29.44.
SDSU improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the MWC. TCU fell to 1-1, 1-1.
The Frog women return to action Nov. 11 when they host Colorado State inside the TCU University Rec Center Natatorium. It will be the last home meet of 2010.
