FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Jordan Calhoun became the all-time leading goal scorer in school history on Friday night as TCU downed UNLV at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, 3-1.
"I was really happy with how we came out tonight," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I thought we put a lot of pressure on them early and created a lot of chances, which allowed us to get into the flow of the game. I thought we relaxed a little bit, but I was happy with how we responded in the second half. We were able to get the game back under control, which really helped us in the second half."
Calhoun led the Horned Frog offensive attack with three shots-on-goal and two goals, while senior Jackie Torda posted two shots, one assist and a goal on Friday night in front of 1,790 spectators at Jane Justin Field.
The match was played in front of the ninth largest attendance in school history. Overall, TCU is now 14-0-0 since 2008 when a TCU player scores multiple times in a match. The Horned Frogs also moved to 7-0-0 when Calhoun finds the back of the net more than once in a contest.
TCU came out firing on cylinders as the Frogs recorded the first six shot attempts in the contest. Calhoun almost scored early in the game, but UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell came up with a big save to keep the Purple and White off the board. Freshman Brittany Slyman followed Calhoun's shot and blasted a ball towards the right side of the goal off a cross from Kristen Halverson, but the ball hit the post.
Calhoun put the Frogs on the board 2 minutes, 54 seconds into the game, finding the back of the net off an assist by Torda. The goal, which at that point gave the Oklahoma native 28 for her career, moved the junior past former Frog great Lizzy Karoly for the all-time record in goals scored in TCU history.
The Frogs' continued to pressure UNLV a few moments later when Torda found herself open in the box, but Wassell was up to the task again. In the 9th minute of the first half, Slyman tried one more time to light up the scoreboard, hitting the crossbar. Halverson played the ricochet, but couldn't connect, pushing the ball wide.
Late in the first half, freshman Kelly Johnson almost gave TCU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime as her header just missed getting by Wassell.
Slyman and the Horned Frogs came out of halftime on the attack, but the Frisco native couldn't beat Wassell off a header.
Torda increased the Purple and White lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute, scoring her second goal of the season and fourth all-time against UNLV, off a pass from Kaylie Garcia. On the play, Garcia played a beautiful ball over to Torda, who pushed it into the goal from the right side of the box.
Calhoun continued her impressive night in the 66th minute, netting her second goal of the game on a breakaway from Garcia. The Norman, Okla., native weaved through the Rebel defense and blasted the ball past Wassell to give TCU a comfortable 3-0 lead late in the contest.
Finally, the Rebels' Ashleigh Shoughro scored the final points of the night from the middle of the box at the 84:30 mark of the second half.
UNLV, who faced relentless pressure from TCU all night, held a slight advantage in shot attempts, recording a 19-13 advantage. On defense, Kelsey Walters, who held the Rebels scoreless for the first half, posted eight saves, while Wassell made four stops.
"We have been playing well, but haven't been finishing, so I was very happy with how we performed tonight," said Abdalla. "I thought Jordan Calhoun, Brittany Slyman and Kim Castleberry were all dangerous tonight. They all created chances for each other. I was also pleased with Kristen Halverson's play tonight. Overall, we were able to get the ball into the back of the net tonight, which always helps."
With the win, TCU moved to 7-6-1 overall and 1-1-0 in MWC play, while UNLV dropped to 8-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Mountain West Conference.
The Horned Frogs will next be in action on Thursday, Oct. 14 against nationally ranked BYU. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
