"The frustrating thing about soccer at this level is that you can play extremely well, but still come up short," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "To beat a top 10 team, you have to capitalize on your chances and we didn't tonight. We have to keep our focus and continue to work on being more dangerous. We were better defensively tonight and very well organized, so we didn't give away a lot of chances, which is good. Overall, our work rate all over the field was very good. We just need to get a little bit better inside the box, but we are heading in the right direction. The fact that we competed head-to-head with a top 10 team in the country shows where we are at. Now, we just have to be able to compete on that level on a consistent basis."
Overall, the Frogs recorded a 16-10 advantage in shot attempts, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half. Jackie Torda led the Horned Frog offensive attack with four shots, while Brittany Slyman, Jordan Calhoun and Kim Castleberry all posted three shots apiece, respectively.
BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson, who faced constant pressure from TCU early and often on Thursday, recorded six saves, while Kelsey Walters posted four stops at Jane Justin Field in front of 1,353 spectators.
Early in the match, Calhoun appeared to have put TCU on the board, but the junior's header was saved by McKinzie Olson.
Torda, a Colleyville native, continued the Horned Frogs' relentless pressure a few moments later, but her header off a free kick by Katie Taylor was once again saved Olson.
The lone goal of the night came at the 19:07 mark of the first half when BYU's Carlee Payne found the back of the net off a cross from Stacy Bartholomew.
Torda tried to tie the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute, missing from just outside the box.
Midway through the first half, Kristen Halverson pressured deep in BYU territory off a cross from Calhoun, but the junior couldn't connect on the ball in the middle of the box to tie the game at 1-1.
Nikki Wilbur almost found the back of the net in the 36th minute, driving the ball from 15 yards out, but Olson was up to the task again, pouncing on the ball before it could cross the goal.
Following halftime, the Frogs posted the first two shots of the half when Calhoun and Slyman fired away, but a BYU defender slid in front of both shots, respectively, to keep TCU off the board.
The Purple and White continued their relentless pressure in the 57th minute, but couldn't light up the scoreboard. Torda appeared to have an opportunity off a cross from Chelsea Wilgenburg. On the play, Wilgenburg fired a ball into the box to Torda, who rocketed the ball toward Olson, but couldn't connect.
In the 59th minute, Castleberry weaved her way through the Cougar defense and passed the ball off to Slyman, who just pushed the ball wide to keep the scoreboard in favor of the Cougars, 1-0.
Torda tried to put a bicycle kick into the net in the 57th minute, but Olson stopped the shot before it could cross the goal. The senior continued to attack a few moments later, but couldn't connect, sailing the ball high over the top half of the goal.
Following two-straight shots by Castleberry, freshman Kristen Barg tried to tie the game at 1-1 just missing from outside the box as Olson stopped the ball late in the second half.
Calhoun tried to rally the Horned Frogs in the 87th minute, but couldn't connect off a corner kick by Alex Mechalske.
With the loss, TCU moved to 7-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in MWC play, while the Cougars improved to 12-1-1 and 3-0-0 in conference action.
The Horned Frogs will return to the pitch on Saturday against Utah. Start time for the match at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium is set for 10 a.m.
