Scouting UNLV
UNLV comes into Friday's game with an 8-4-0 overall record and a 0-1-0 mark in conference play. In their last outing, the Rebels, who are currently ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA Pacific Regional rankings, dropped a 4-0 contest to New Mexico in Las Vegas. For the match, UNLV held a 14-9 shot advantage over UNM. Senior's Ashleigh Shoughro and Amanda Forrester led the Rebel offensive attack, recording three shots apiece, respectively.
UNLV, who saw its three-game win streak snapped last weekend, is 1-0-0 on the road this fall. Overall, the Rebels, who have played four contests on neutral sites this season, haven't played a true road game since upending UC Riverside, 1-0, to open the year.
Shoughro has led the UNLV offense this fall, finding the back of the net nine times, while also dishing out three assists. Forrester and sophomore Colette Jepson have each posted four goals apiece, respectively. On defense, freshman Kylie Wassell has saved 43 balls this season, while also posting three shutouts.
Scouting TCU
TCU, who is 6-6-1 entering Friday's contest, is coming off a 5-2 victory over Houston Baptist last Sunday. The Horned Frogs, who were in HBU territory for the majority of the day, held a 28-8 shot advantage in the match, including a 14-2 mark in the second half. Overall, junior Kristen Halverson scored two goals and assisted on another against the Huskies.
In its conference opener last Friday night, TCU totaled 15 shot attempts, but dropped a 1-0 double overtime heartbreaker to San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Horned Frogs missed on several scoring breakaways throughout the match, including a shot by Jordan Calhoun in the first overtime period that hit the post. Senior Jackie Torda appeared to have given the Horned Frogs a 1-0 victory late in the second half, but her shot in the 87th minute was derailed by the crossbar.
The Purple and White, who are 3-3-1 at home this fall, currently rank No. 23 in the NCAA in scoring offense. The Frogs are led on offense by Calhoun and Kim Castleberry, who have both netted four goals apiece, respectively. Calhoun only needs one more goal to become TCU's all-time leading goal scorer in school history.
All-Time Series Breakdown
Friday's match against UNLV will mark the seventh meeting between the two conference foes. The Rebels lead the all-time series, 4-1-1.
In 2009, TCU posted its first victory over UNLV in program history, downing the Rebels in overtime, 3-2. Overall, the last two meetings between UNLV and TCU have gone to overtime, including a 1-1 double overtime draw in 2008 at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Torda Ready For More Heroics
Senior Jackie Torda has played her best against UNLV during her four years in Fort Worth. Overall, the Colleyville native has posted 11 shots and three goals all-time against the Rebels, including two of the Horned Frogs three goals last fall. Upon further look, Torda has played a major part in TCU's late game heroics against UNLV the last couple of years.
In 2009, Torda scored the gamewinner in overtime at the 97:16 mark to lift TCU to a 3-2 victory over UNLV at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Rewind to the season before and the then sophomore netted the equalizing goal in the 84th minute of the second half to force overtime.
Bouncing Back Nicely
The Frogs will look to continue a winning trend this Friday night when it faces off against UNLV. During the last four seasons, TCU is 3-0-1 in its next game following its first conference loss of the season. Overall, the Purple and White have combined to outscore their opponents in their next game, 5-1. In those four contests, TCU has played in overtime twice, including a double overtime scoreless match with New Mexico in 2006.
Double Overtimes Nothing New Under Abdalla
When TCU battled San Diego State to double overtime last weekend, it marked the fifth double overtime contest in the last six years in MWC play. TCU, who has taken UNLV to overtime in both 2008 and 2009, has played a total of 12 overtime matches against conference foes under head coach Dan Abdalla during the last five years. During those 12 contests, TCU is a combined 3-5-4 overall, including going 2-1-0 last fall. In their last seven overtime matches dating back to a 1-1 double overtime draw to Friday night's opponent UNLV in 2008, the Purple and White have gone 3-3-1.
Horned Frogs In NCAA Statistics
13 games into the 2010 season, TCU has fared well amongst the national leaders. As a team, TCU currently ranks No. 23 overall in scoring offense, while senior Chelsea Cody sits just inside the top 150 in assists-per-game, ranking No. 135 in the nation.
Mountain West Statistics Update
Heading into Friday's contest, TCU currently ranks No. 1 in the conference in shots (269), points (85), goals (31) and assists (23). The Frogs sit No. 2 in the MWC in goals-per-game (2.38) and assists-per-game (1.77).
Individually, Jordan Calhoun currently sits No. 1 in shots for the season with 53. The junior also ranks No. 3 in shots-per-game (4.08). Senior Chelsea Cody is also among the MWC leaders, ranking fifth in assists (4) and assists-per-game (0.36). Fellow senior Kelsey Walters moved into the top 5 this week in save percentage with a .755 average this fall. Walters also ranks No. 5 in saves-per-game (4.00).
