TULSA, Okla.—Emanuel Brighiu advanced in the men's qualifying singles bracket Monday at the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Horned Frog senior will continue play in Round 2 on Tuesday.
Brighiu, who earned an at-large bid to the qualifying bracket through the "Lucky Loser" process, saw his first-round opponent, Fresno State's Rikus de Villiers, retire in the middle of their Monday first-round match. De Villiers won the opening set, 6-2, but Brighiu had grabbed a 5-2 lead in the second set at the time his opponent elected to retire.
Next up for Brighiu is a second-round meeting on Tuesday with the winner of Monday's match between Louisville's Simon Childs and Pepperdine's Finn Tearney. Childs received the No. 16 seed in the qualifying draw.
Also on tap for tomorrow is the start of qualifying doubles competition. Frog duos scheduled for action include the pairings of Brighiu and senior Christopher Price and senior Cameron Nash and junior Paul Chappell. Brighiu and Price, who are the bracket's No. 1 seed, will begin play against Tennessee's Matteo Fago-Tennys Sandgren, while Nash and Chappell will face South Alabama's Romain Bocaert-Lucas Viel.
