AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Jordan Calhoun led the TCU offensive attack Sunday with five shot attempts, but couldn't find the back of the net as the Horned Frogs dropped a 1-0 contest to Air Force at Air Force Soccer Stadium. The Purple and White were outshot slightly by the Falcons, 13-11. Jackie Torda chipped in with two shot attempts, including one shot-on-goal in windy conditions. Air Force goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh was forced to save three shots, while senior Kelsey Walters, who faced only two shots-on-goal Sunday, stopped one shot. The Horned Frogs did tally a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks Sunday.
Early in the match, Leigha Leonard, a Colorado native, tried to ignite the Frog offense and looked to have put TCU ahead in the contest, but her rocket hit the post to keep the Horned Frogs off the scoreboard. In the 20th minute, Torda continued the Purple and White pressure just missing as Stambaugh came up with a big save.
Following a corner kick by junior Alex Mechalske, Katie Taylor tried to put TCU on the board, but her header from inside the box sailed high over the goal.
Air Force junior Kelly Bieber scored the eventual gamewinner at the 24:59 mark of the first half off a cross from Sophia Lockerby.
Midway through the first half, Torda tried to tie the game at 1-1, but couldn't connect, pushing the ball high. Calhoun had a chance right before halftime, missing wide to keep the scoreboard at 1-0 in favor of Air Force.
Calhoun came out of the break on the offensive attack, rocketing a shot towards the back of the net, but Stambaugh was able to pounce on the ball to nullify the offensive threat. A few moments later, junior Kaylie Garcia tried to get into the mix, but Stambaugh was up to the task again, saving the ball in the 53rd minute.
Late in the game, Calhoun missed on two-straight shots as each time an Air Force defender slid in front of the Norman, Okla., native to derail the shot attempt. The junior tried one last time to tie the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute, but was denied as her shot went wide.
With the loss, TCU moved to 7-10-1 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play, while Air Force captured its first Mountain West Conference victory of the season, bringing its overall record to 8-9-1 and 1-5-0 in the MWC. On Sunday, the Falcons posted only their second victory over the Horned Frogs in nine tries.
TCU will close its 2010 season next Saturday night against nationally ranked New Mexico. Start time is set for 7 p.m. CT at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The match against the Lobos will mark the final home game for Chelsea Cody, Cheryl Martin, Torda, Walters and Nikki Wilbur. The five seniors have combined to win 38 games and have played in three-straight conference tournaments. The contest against New Mexico will also mark the second time this season the Horned Frogs will play in front of a television audience. The final home game will be shown on tape-delay on The Mtn.
