Brighiu Advances in Singles, Doubles at Texas Regional

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Senior Emanuel Brighiu led TCU on the opening day of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship by advancing in both singles and doubles Saturday at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Brighiu, seeded No. 14 in the singles main draw, posted a second-round victory in his only singles match of the day against Rice's Sam Garfoth Bles, 6-4, 6-1. The native of Iasi, Romani, earned an opening-round bye as one of the tournament's top seeds. His Round-of-64 win advanced him to Sunday's third round, where he will face Texas A&M's 17th-seeded Alberto Baustista.
Brighiu also carried the banner for TCU's doubles competition while playing alongside fellow senior Christopher Price. The Frog duo, seeded No. 2 in the doubles main draw, posted an easy 8-2 win over Texas A&M's Daniel Brown/Kayvon T. Karimi in the Round of 32. The pairing is next scheduled to play Texas' Ben Chen/Vasil Mladenov in Sunday's Round of 16.
Senior Zach Nichols and junior Paul Chappell also earned a doubles win Saturday, taking down Lamar's Marton Horvath/Dusan Savkovic, 8-4, in the Round of 128. The Frogs dropped an 8-5 decision to Texas' Jean Andersen/Ed Corrie, the No. 3 overall seed, in the following round.
In addition to Brighiu's win in singles, three other TCU players opened their weekend of singles competition with victories in the Round of 128 before falling in the ensuing round. Price downed Texas' Alex Hilliard, 6-4, 6-1, before dropping a tough match to Baylor's Robert Verzaal, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2. Sophomore Santiago Centeno posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Prairie View A&M's Ronald Chidzikwe before being eliminated by 12th-seeded Jean Anderson (Texas), 6-1, 6-2. Chappell breezed past Prairie View's Jimmy Yates, 6-1, 6-0, prior to suffering a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 loss to Texas A&M's Alberto Bautista.
