POSTGAME QUOTES
No. 4 TCU 38, Air Force 7
Fort Worth, Texas (Amon G. Carter Stadium)
Oct. 23, 2010
Attendance: 46,096
TCU Coach Gary Patterson
On playing Air Force
"No. 1, Air Force is a tough football team. You don't have to look at the score. Every year it is the toughest game to get ready to play with what they do."
On his team's play as a whole
"You've got to give the offensive line credit. A lot of people say 'the defense played great.' The defense played great because they are standing on the sidelines. I told them downstairs that was one of our more complete efforts. It's about being disciplined, getting physical, doing the things we need to do and we've gotten to 8-0, now we need to move on."
On continuing to win and playing the rest of the season
"This time of the year, no win is that much bigger than any other win. Next three out of four ballgames we go on the road, so we've got a lot of work to do."
On the play of Ed Wesley and the offensive line
"That was a great performance. A lot of it had to do with Ed and a lot of it had to do with the offensive line. We were down three starting offensive lineman who didn't play this ballgame. For us to go run the ball like we did speaks volumes for what we can do in the future. The rest of those guys are younger players."
On the play of the offense as a whole
"I think you have to give our offensive staff a lot of credit with schematics of what we tried to get done and the checks that we did. Air Force moves around a lot. They do a lot of zone blitzing, a lot of stunting and a lot of slants."
On tonight's attendance and the senior class
"I was really excited about the size of the audience we had tonight. It made a big difference. We had a big crowd. That was the 39th win for this senior class. They started the season off at 31. If they can win 43, they'll be the most winning class. They've got to win four more in the next five ballgames."
Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun
On the TCU defense
"You can move the ball on them but there have to be no penalties and no fumbles. Then there are times when you are a yard short and you just needed another yard to sustain a drive. They are a superb group and a terrific football team. They are big, fast and experienced. The last three times we have come down here they have been dominant."
On not going for it on fourth down a couple of times
"We thought about going for it on fourth down, the first one especially. At that point it was a three-point game and there were two times we thought about it. One was about two feet and the other was a yard. Because it was a three-point game, we felt we could punt and gain field position, which we did. But, in hindsight we look back now and we should have gone for it."
On the first offensive drive
"It was a good drive to go 90 yards, but we did not do it enough. They are really good but we could have played better; we are going to have to. If you do not play terrific mentally it becomes more evident when you play a real good team."
On the play of his team
"We could play a lot better, but they played pretty good as well. We have to play better. We have a very challenging road ahead of us, but yet at the same time we are going to have to elevate across the board. It is easy to say we have to play better, but it is all of us that are involved."
TCU Safety Colin Jones
On holding the No. 1 rushing offense in the nation to less than 200 yards
"They started out quickly and we had to adjust to the speed of the game. Our scout team did a great job of preparing us this week. As a team they play fast and they always match their assignments perfectly. Everybody has to play their best game, and if you do you shut them down. Sometimes it's hard to stay in your gap and keep your assignment."
On what changed in the second quarter
"We adjusted to the speed of the game and made a few small changes and everything came together for us."
On the TCU defense being dominating each week
"The confidence plays a big part, especially on defense. When you get going, you like to keep going. Big plays hurt that, and if you eliminate those then everything else works out. Air Force is a great offense, so they will make plays but you have to come back and stop them."
TCU Quarterback Andy Dalton
On his 47 yard run in the third quarter
"I have never seen that much open grass in my life. I just made sure to get out of bounds real quick."
On keeping the TCU offense on the field
"It was part of the game plan; we saw on film that we could run the ball on them. We just came out and executed well. Up front we were blocking well, making holes and all the running backs were able to get in there."
On knowing they would have a big day on the ground
"It's something we see on film, it's something we figure out as the game goes on. I think with everything that Ed Wesley and Matthew Tucker can do, they started to try to take them away a little bit. That left it open for me."
On if he knew Ed Wesley would have a big game
"The way he has been playing all year, you can see he is playing with great passion and he loves to be out here. For him to come out and explode like he did tonight, he just did a great job."
On the play of the offensive line
"The way we practice every day, the ones and twos take the same amount of reps. Spencer Thompson has stepped in and played really well, and the same with Jeff Olson, they have been playing really well. Coach Williamson does a great job getting them prepared, and it showed."
