LARAMIE, Wyo. - In sloppy conditions Friday night, the TCU women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Wyoming at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.Overall, Wyoming held a slight advantage in shot attempts for the contest with a 14-12 advantage. TCU outshot the Cowgirls in the second half, 6-5. Junior Katie Taylor led the Horned Frog offense, connecting on four shots-on-goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. Sophomore Kim Castleberry also tallied three shot attempts at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Walters saved seven shots on Friday, while Wyoming keeper Courtney Merkle had an impressive night, stopping six balls, including several key saves in the second half to keep the Frogs off the scoreboard.
Wyoming jumped on top early in the game when Jerrica DiVincenzo slid a ball past Walters off an assist from Liz Oreilly. TCU bounced back quickly when senior Jackie Torda fired away in the 18th minute, but pushed the ball wide. A few moments later, Taylor appeared to have tied the game at 1-1, but Merkle was able to stop the shot before it could cross the goal.
Taylor just missed at the 26:32 mark of the first half as Merkle saved the junior's attempt to keep the Purple and White off the board. Following a corner kick by Alex Mechalske, fellow junior Jordan Calhoun fired from inside the box, but a Wyoming defender slid in front of the Norman, Okla., native to block the attempt.
Down 1-0 coming out of halftime, the Horned Frogs appeared to have gotten on the board early in the second half when Mechalske connected, but the Wyoming defense was up to the task again, recording a team save before TCU could light up the scoreboard.
Midway through the second half, Taylor continued to pressure the Cowgirls, but Merkle made a diving save to nullify the shot attempt. A few moments later, Castleberry missed on two-straight attempts, while Torda fired high in the 77th minute from 25 yards out.
Makenzie Meade put the finishing touches on the Wyoming upset, scoring an insurance goal at the 89:08 mark of the second half.
With the loss, TCU moved to 7-9-1 overall and 1-4-0 in MWC play, while the Cowgirls improved to 7-9-1 and 1-3-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
The Horned Frogs will return to action Sunday at Air Force. Start time is set for Noon CT at the Air Force Soccer Stadium.
