FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team earned a No. 27 ranking in the season's initial Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Wednesday. The Horned Frogs have a singles player listed in the national rankings, along with a pair of doubles squads.
The Frogs will begin the season two slots ahead of its No. 29 finish in 2009. TCU is the highest ranked Mountain West Conference squad.
Despite not being ranked in the preseason rankings before the fall semester, sophomore Kayla Duncan will begin the 2010 season with a singles ranking of No. 67. The Winston Salem, N.C., product paced TCU with a 13-6 record and took down six nationally-ranked opponents during the fall season. Duncan and senior Megan Alexander will also begin the spring schedule ranked No. 8 and 17, respectively, in the Texas Region.
After claiming a No. 14 preseason singles ranking before the fall schedule, senior Nina Munch-Soegaard did not compete due to offseason shoulder surgery. The 2009 All-American will have to get some wins under her belt this spring to return to the national listings.
Duncan and Alexander also appear in the national rankings as a doubles tandem, beginning the year ranked No. 17 by the ITA. During the fall semester, the duo teamed up for a 5-0 record to win the doubles crown at the Racquet Club Invitational, upending pairings from UT Arlington, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Rice and Boise State.
The 2009 all-MWC team of Duncan and junior Katariina Tuohimaa round out the Frogs' national listings, beginning the year ranked No. 59. Last season, the pairing enjoyed a record of 14-8, highlighted by a 6-1 clip against the MWC. This year's ranking is the first for the duo since teaming up last year. Duncan and Tuohimaa are also listed at No. 7 in the Texas Regional rankings, ahead of Alexander and junior Maria Babanova at No. 10.
TCU will begin the spring season on Jan. 29 in Knoxville, Tenn., as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, taking on No. 22 Vanderbilt at 9 a.m. The Frogs will face a tough dual match schedule, playing 16 NCAA qualifiers from 2009.
