
Horned Frogs Drop Heartbreaker To Alabama

LUBBOCK, Texas - TCU tallied 19 shots on Sunday at the Red Raider Classic, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Alabama.Early in the match, junior Jackie Torda tried to find the back of the net off a run from outside the box, but her shot was saved by Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier.
In the 13th minute, Lizzy Karoly got behind the Crimson Tide defense, but her shot from the right side of the box was saved by a diving Bernier at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Karoly, a senior from Escondido, Calif., continued to pressure Alabama as she posted two-consecutive shots in the 14th and 16th minute, respectively, but couldn't break the 0-0 tie.
Senior Michelle Nguyen tried to put the Frogs on the board midway through the half off a cross from Torda, but the ball sailed wide of the goal.
Following the break, Brooke Rogers broke the 0-0 draw in the 49th minute, flicking the ball over a leaping Kira Michelson-Bartlett to give the Crimson Tide the 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Karoly made a run into the middle of the box, but couldn't crack the scoring column off a pass from junior Nikki Wilbur.
In the 60th minute, Nguyen tried to rally TCU, but just missed an opportunity from 15 yards out.
Following a corner kick, Wilbur had her shot from inside the box blocked by an Alabama defender, while sophomore Kaylie Garcia's boot from 20 yards out in the 68th minute, just missed wide of the goal.
Defender Alex Mechalske almost tied the match at 1-1 midway through the half off a cross from Kristen Halverson, but her shot sailed high over the goal.
In the 68th minute, Garcia rocketed a shot towards the back of the net, but had her shot blocked by the Crimson Tide.
With only 5 minutes remaining in the contest, Nguyen crossed the ball from the left side of the field to Jordan Calhoun, who headed it towards the top-half of the goal, but the ball sailed wide to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Alabama.
Overall, TCU outshot the Crimson Tide, 19-8, including 10-1 in the first half. The Purple and White also recorded a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks for the match. Karoly led the offensive attack for the Frogs with four shots attempts, while Torda chipped in with three.
On defense, Michelson-Bartlett had a solid first outing, saving four shots, while Bernier recorded eight saves.
Earning all-tournament team honors on Sunday were Calhoun, Wilbur and Katie Taylor.
With the loss, TCU moved to 5-4-0 on the year, while Alabama improved to 4-3-0.
TCU will resume action next Friday against Stephen F. Austin. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. in Fort Worth.
