FORT WORTH, Texas - Kaylie Garcia netted her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute to give No. 28 TCU a 1-0 victory over UT San Antonio on Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium."I think we showed we have a long ways to go with our heart and desire," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I am going to challenge the girls to get better."
On the play, Garcia found the back of the net from about 20 yards out off assists from Kristen Halverson and Alex Mechalske. The goal for Garcia marked her fourth goal of her career and first in 2009.
Four minutes into the match it looked as if the Horned Frog would net an early goal when freshman Leigha Leonard darted into the right side of the box and headed the ball towards the back of the net off a cross by Lizzy Karoly, but the ball sailed wide of the goal to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Calhoun tried to give TCU the 1-0 advantage in the 8th minute, but couldn't connect from 30 yards out as UTSA goalkeeper Dacia Webb came up with a diving save.
Following Garcia's goal, the Frogs' Katie Runyon found herself wide open in the box with 30 seconds remaining in the half, but Webb came up with another huge save to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Horned Frogs going into the half.
Following the 15-minute intermission, TCU, who pressured the Roadrunners all night long, came out firing on all cylinders. In the 56th minute, Nikki Wilbur just missed putting TCU up by two, booming a kick towards the goal off a pass from Katie Taylor, but her shot sailed wide of the net.
The Purple and White continued to pressure UTSA midway through the half as Garcia, Jackie Torda and Chelsea Cody all misfired on shot attempts deep in Roadrunner territory.
Finally, it looked as if Leonard would net an insurance goal in the 86th minute of the contest, but her shot was saved by Webb.
For the match, the Horned Frogs, who had a goal called off because of a foul inside the box, outshot the Roadrunners, 28-5, including 19-2 in the first half. Calhoun led TCU in shot attempts for the match with six, while Garcia and Torda connected on four apiece, respectively.
Kelsey Walters and the TCU defense did not allow the Roadrunners to attempt a shot in the first half until the 37th minute of the half. Walters, a junior from Oklahoma City, Okla., came up with a huge save late in the match to secure the Purple and White's second-straight victory.
The nationally ranked Horned Frogs, who played in front of 1,122 spectators on Friday night, moved to 2-0-0 on the season, while UTSA dropped to 1-2-0.
TCU will be back in action on Sunday against Houston Baptist. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
