FORT WORTH, Texas - Jordan Calhoun netted a goal and assisted on another to lead No. 28 TCU to a 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist on Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium."I thought we showed better effort today," said head coach Dan Abdalla. "I was pleased with the fact that we could put three goals into the back of the net, but we still have a lot to work to do. Overall, I thought today was better and a step in the right direction. We just have to continue to get better every game."
The Horned Frogs got right to work in the 8th minute of the match when senior Michelle Nguyen found the back of the net following a corner kick. On the play, the Richardson native looped a ball over HBU goalkeeper Michelle Rich from the right side of the box to give the Frogs the early 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, fellow senior Lizzy Karoly split the posts when Calhoun slipped a ball through the HBU defense to a streaking Karoly who beat a diving Rich on the play. The goal for the returning all-conference selection was her first goal of the season and 23rd of her career.
"Jordan played a great ball to me and I was able to get it past their keeper," said Karoly. "We're getting better every game. I thought we did some good things today, but we have a lot to work on as well."
Midway through the half, the Frogs' Nikki Wilbur appeared to have given TCU a 3-0 advantage in the match, but watched as her shot from the middle of the box was knocked over the goal by a leaping Rich to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of the Horned Frogs going into the break.
Calhoun tried to increase the TCU lead in the 60th minute off a cross by Alex Mechalske, but Rich came up with another huge save to put an end to the TCU run.
Following a penalty kick goal by HBU's Gabby Trujillo, Jackie Torda tried to connect on TCU's third goal of the day from 15 yards out, but her ball sailed high of the goal to keep the score at 2-1.
Calhoun netted her third goal of the season in the 89th minute off an assist by sophomore Kristen Halverson. Following a shot by Halverson, Calhoun proceeded to pick up the ricochet and place the ball into the back of the net to give TCU the 3-1 victory.
"Today was a step in the right direction, we just have to continue work better as a team," said Calhoun, who moved into fifth all-time in career goals on Sunday with 18 for her career.
With the victory, the Purple and White moved to 3-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0 at home, while Houston Baptist dropped to 0-1-0. The Horned Frogs, who have now won three in-a-row, were led on offense by Karoly who posted three shots on Sunday afternoon.
Kelsey Walters had another solid day in goal for the Frogs as she stopped three balls, while Rich saved three on Sunday for HBU.
TCU pressured the Huskies all day, outshooting HBU, 12-4, including 9-2 in the first half. The Horned Frogs also totaled nine corner kicks for the match.
The Purple and White will open up the month of September with a home match against Texas Tech next Friday night. Start time for the match is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
