Cosmin Cotet, a three-year letterwinner and former Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for the TCU men's tennis team from 2006 through 2008, has accepted a position as assistant coach for the SMU women's tennis team. The native of Iasi, Romania, collected 60 career singles wins and 65 doubles victories in three seasons as a Horned Frog.
Cotet was named Co-MWC Player of the Year as a senior in 2008, when he posted a 26-9 record and climbed as high as No. 21 in the ITA national singles ratings. He defeated three players ranked in the top 15 that season before concluding his career by qualifying for both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. He played alongside former teammate Kriegler Brink for much of that season while compiling a 23-8 overall doubles record.
TCU reached the NCAA Team Championships in two of Cotet's three seasons on campus.
Prior to his arrival at TCU, Cotet spent a season at the University of Iasi in Romania, where he was ranked as high as No. 13 in Romania Fuentes. Last spring, he reached the Wildcard Singles Finals, a qualifier for the St. Vincent Auxillary Tournament.
Cotet becomes the second former pupil of TCU head coach Dave Borelli to enter the coaching field in the last month. Story Tweedie-Yates, an All-American for Borelli in 2005 when he coached the Frog women's program, was hired as an assistant coach at Fresno State last week.
"I'm really excited to have a couple former players earn jobs at big-time programs," Borelli said. "Both Cosmin and Story were great team leaders, and I'm sure they will be very successful coaching at the collegiate level."
