Sverrisdottir Named MWC Player of the Week

FORT WORTH—TCU junior Helena Sverrisdottir has been named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The honor marks the sixth MWC weekly award of her career.
Sverrisdottir helped TCU go 2-0 last week with victories at SMU and at home against No. 5 Texas A&M. She averaged a double-double for the week with 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, in addition to recording averages of 6.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest.
The 6-1 combo guard/forward recorded her third double-double of the fall with 18 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in Wednesday's 84-66 road victory over cross-town rival SMU. She shot 6-of-11 from the field against the Mustangs while adding five assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals.
Sverrisdottir later scored a season-high 20 points while adding eight rebounds and seven assists to help lead a late TCU rally in a 56-54 home win over the fifth-ranked Aggies. Eighteen of her points came in the second half, thanks in part to a trio of 3-pointers in the period. She scored eight straight points to help TCU tie the game in the final minutes, including the game-tying 3-pointer with 1:29 to play.
A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Sverrisdottir is experiencing another solid campaign for the Lady Frogs following last season's All-Mountain West Conference effort. She currently paces the league in assists (5.3 apg) while ranking among the leaders in steals (No. 3; 3.1 spg), scoring (No. 7; 13.7 ppg), blocked shots (No. 9, 1.0 bpg) and rebounding (No. 10; 6.7 rpg).
Sverrisdottir's selection marks TCU's second MWC Player of the Week award of the season. Freshman forward Starr Crawford shared the honor with UNLV sophomore forward Jamie Smith on Nov. 23.
TCU returns to the court Sunday, Dec. 20, when it plays host to Sam Houston State. Tip-off at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum is scheduled for 1 p.m.
