FORT WORTH—The TCU men's tennis team will add a highly talented prospect to its roster for the upcoming semester in Germany native Soren Goritzka, Horned Frog head coach Dave Borelli announced Monday. Goritzka will be eligible to compete for the Frogs as a freshman beginning this January.
A product of Wilhemshaven, Germany, Goritzka, will arrive at TCU as the No. 81-ranked player in men's singles in Germany. He climbed at one point to a high position of No. 1,393 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings before suffering from a series of random injuries that hampered him over the last two seasons, including a broken hand and foot. Now back to full health, Goritzka was recruited for the Spring 2010 term by over 20 schools, including most of the top SEC programs.
"Soren is 6-5, has an unbelievably big serve and also a very good return," Borelli said. "He is a very solid player and I feel that with his freak injuries behind him, he could become one of the top players in college in the next couple of years.
"We really scored big-time with Soren," Borelli added. "He's a guy that top-10 programs were recruiting for the spring. What helps is that he is also a good doubles player and his favorite surface is fast indoor carpet, so he should be a big asset when we have to play conference matches at altitude. He's also a good student and good young man."
The big righthander experienced a standout career in the German junior ranks prior to his injuries. He was ranked No. 4 in German junior singles in 2006 and placed third in both singles and doubles of the 2007 German Junior Championships. Goritzka followed up his 2007 showing at the German junior event with 2008 finishes of third in singles and runner-up in doubles.
"Adding Soren to the team will really make us solid from top to bottom for the first time since I took over the men's program," Borelli said. "I don't think we'll be giving away matches at any position against anybody in the country. Moreover, there will be no seniors in the starting lineup, so I'm really looking forward to the spring season."
TCU opens the spring season Jan. 24 in Arlington, Texas, when it plays a pair of team matches against UT Pan Am and UT Arlington.
