FORT WORTH--The TCU women's basketball team kicks off a Monday hoops tripleheader at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum by playing host to Texas Southern at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the women's game is free, and no ticket is required for entry.
The Lady Frogs' game with the Tigers was scheduled early due to the TCU men's team playing host to an NIT doubleheader Monday evening.
Head coach Jeff Mittie's squad will look to get back on the winning track after suffering their first loss of the season Saturday--a tough 74-70 decision to No. 20/16 Oklahoma in Norman. Returning to the DMC could be the perfect diagnosis for the team to regroup. TCU is 37-4 over its last 41 games played at the facility.
TCU's matchup with TSU can be heard live on the radio throughout the Metroplex on 88.7 KTCU-FM with Jeff Williams and Jeff Lewis serving as the play-by-play team. Williams is in his 12th season as the voice of the Lady Frogs, while Lewis joins the broadcast for his second year as color commentator. Live stats and a link to an Internet radio feed will be available on game day via GoFrogs.com.
INSIDE THE SERIES
TCU leads the all-time series with Texas Southern, 2-0. The teams have not played since Dec. 30, 2002, when the Frogs held the Tigers to an NCAA single-game record low of only 16 points during a 76-16 victory. The figure still stands to this day as the fewest points ever allowed during an NCAA Division I women's basketball game. TCU won the only other meeting in the series, 78-54, on Dec. 18, 1995.
SCOUTING TEXAS SOUTHERN
Texas Southern enters today's game with a 1-2 record after having fallen to Texas A&M Corpus Christ at home Saturday, 71-62. The squad opened the season with a pair of road games--a 64-57 loss to Louisiana and a 65-58 win over UT Pan American.
The Tigers are coming off a campaign in which they went 10-20 and finished eighth in the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) with an 8-10 mark. Second-year head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton returns three players with starting experience from last season's team.
Three players own double-figure scoring averages early in the season, including junior newcomer NaDosha Strickland, who leads the team at 12.3 points per game. Forward Inisha Daughtry is averaging 10.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest, while forward Jasmine Payne owns averages of 10.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Guard Jasmine Cannon (4.0 assists per game) paces the squad in helpers.
LAST TIME WE MET: TCU 76, TEXAS SOUTHERN 16
FORTH WORTH (Dec. 30, 2002)--TCU had a record-shattering afternoon as they handily defeated Texas Southern by a 76-16 count at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The biggest record was the nearly 20-year-old NCAA mark for fewest points allowed in a game. The previous record was 19 allowed by Jackson State against Prairie View A&M on March 3, 1983.
The Lady Frogs rushed out to a 15-0 run to start the game, not allowing Texas Southern to score until the 14:18 mark. TCU let the Tigers score only three more points in the half with their last point coming on a free throw by Monica Okolo with 4:29 to go. The Frogs took a commanding 39-5 lead into the locker room at intermission.
TCU started the second half with a 16-0 run to go up 55-5, and continued to hold the Tigers scoreless for another 6:35. Patrice Hunter sank a shot to break the TSU dry spell. However, sophomore Sandora Irvin made three trips to the charity stripe during the next three minutes, sinking the second shot of each pair. Senior Grace Gantt then dropped in the next six points for the Lady Frogs, giving them a 63-9 advantage with 8:35 to play.
TCU steadily increased its advantage throughout the rest of the game, seeing playing time from all players. Jennifer Hickmon scored five of TSU's remaining seven points to lead the Tigers.
Gantt led all scorers with 16 points, while Irvin had an all-around game with 15 points, 12 boards, six blocks and four steals. Ebony Shaw was the third Lady Frog to finish in double figures (10 points). Juniors Tracy Wynn and Amy Pack each pulled down eight rebounds in the effort.
TCU-TEXAS SOUTHERN TIES
Texas Southern head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton served as an assistant coach at TCU under head coach Jeff Mittie from the 2004-05 through 2006-07 seasons. She helped the Frogs post a 63-33 record with three NCAA tournament appearances.
LAST TIME OUT
Starr Crawford and Helena Sverrisdottir both recorded double-doubles for TCU, but No. 20/16 Oklahoma was able to pull away from the Frogs in the second half of their 74-70 win Saturday in Norman.
TCU trailed by seven points, 72-65, with 1:13 remaining before rattling off five quick points to cut the lead to a single possession with 13 seconds left. Crawford had a pair of buckets on back-to-back possessions to bookend a pair of missed free throws by OU forward Ali Olajuwon, who filled the role of OU's most consistent offensive threat of the game.
Following Crawford's final basket, which she followed up with a free throw for a 3-point play, Oklahoma guard Danielle Robinson put the game away by making both of her attempts at the line.
Crawford helped the Frogs fight to game's end and finished with a career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. Sverrisdottir totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists, while TK LaFleur also reached double figures with 13 points.
Olajuwon scored 23 points to lead the Sooners.
