DENVER—TCU junior guard/forward Helena Sverrisdottir was selected to the Mountain West Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team, the league office announced Wednesday. The Lady Frogs were also picked to finish second in the MWC standings this season in a poll of the league's coaches and media.
Sverrisdottir earned a spot on the five-player preseason all-conference squad for the second straight season. She was a first-team All-MWC selection last spring as a sophomore while helping lead TCU to a 20-11 overall record and eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine seasons. She was the only player in the MWC last season to rank among the league's top-7 players in the following four major individual statistical categories: scoring (4th; 15.4 ppg), rebounding (6th; 7.4 rpg); assists (2nd; 4.81 apg); and steals (7th-1.71 spg).
The product of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, has garnered several conference honors in her short two-year stint as a Lady Frog. She was an honorable-mention all-league pick in 2007-08 while being named MWC Freshman of the Year. She also has been named conference player of the week five times in her career, including three times in 2008-09.
Sverrisdottir leads a talented and veteran TCU squad featuring five returning starters into the 2009-10 season. The Frogs received three first-place votes and 216 points in the MWC preseason poll to finish second behind only defending conference co-champion San Diego State, which collected 240 points (25 first place-votes). Rounding out the poll were No. 3 Utah (185 points), No. 4 New Mexico (168 points), No. 5 Wyoming (121 points), No. 6 BYU (109 points), No. 7 UNLV (97 points), No. 8 Colorado State (57 points) and No. 9 Air Force (31 points).
The Frogs have been tabbed to finish among the conference's top-three teams each year since joining the MWC prior to the 2005-06 season. TCU will hold its first official fall practice Oct. 16. The Frogs play one exhibition game Nov. 11 against Cameron University before tipping off their season at home Nov. 15 against Houston Baptist.
