Harkins advances at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

MALIBU, Calif. - In the final day of prequalifying, TCU senior Macall Harkins played well on her home state turf to advance to qualifying singles at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Harkins, a Palos Verdes, Calif., native, topped Kentucky's senior Carolina Escamilla, 7-6 (2), 6-2. The win is Harkins third in the last two days and will advance her into the qualifying singles bracket, joining fellow Frog teammate Nina Munch-Soegaard.
"I am proud of the way that Macall responded today," TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond said. "She played her game and kept her head."
TCU also had the doubles duo of Munch-Soegaard and Maria Babanova competing for the opportunity to advance into the qualifying doubles bracket. The pair started the day with a win over Wichita State's Stephanie Dalmacio and Lutfiana Budiharto, 9-8 (4). The Frogs found themselves down 7-4, but fought their way back into the match, saving six match points to earn the victory.
The duo would have to battle in the second match of the day against UCLA's No. 50 Nina Pantic and Andrea Remnyse. Again, Munch-Soegaard and Babanova would get off to a slow start, down 7-4. Despite saving two match points, the Frogs would fall to the Bruins, 9-8 (7).
"Nina and Maria fought hard in both of their matches today," Hammond said. "They had to fight for the first win and just came up short in the final match."
The tournament will now move from Pepperdine University to the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Singles and doubles qualifying will resume Tuesday and Wednesday before giving way to main draw singles and doubles during the weekend.
TCU has Harkins and Munch-Soegard remaining in singles action, while the doubles squad of Harkins and Anna Sydorska are set for doubles play.
