FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Jackie Torda netted the game-winning goal off an assist from Cheryl Martin in the second overtime period to upend Rice, 2-1, Friday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The goal came with 1:17 left in the final overtime frame.
TCU (5-0-1) was able to control the tempo of the game with constant pressure on the Owl defense. The Horned Frogs outshot Rice (3-2-0) for the match, 30-11, tallying nine shots on goal. The intensity for the Frogs rose in the extra periods, tacking on all five TCU corner kicks in overtime.
Rice opened up the scoring in the match with an unassisted goal by Erin Scott. Horned Frog goalkeeper Kelsey Walters made the save on an attempted shot by the Owls, but the ball deflected off of the right-side post directly to Scott for the open shot.
TCU matched the Owls as Lizzy Karoly deflected a free kick from Katie Taylor from about 30 yards out. Taylor sent a diving ball into the box and Karoly slid in to tie the match in the 77th minute, 1-1.
The two clubs gave the crowd at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium an exciting show in the bonus frames, narrowly missing numerous scoring chances. The Owls had drawn Walters from the goal in the first overtime period, but missed an open-net opportunity by inches, wide right. The Frogs also had missed opportunities, as Jordan Calhoun tapped a shot off the post and Karoly drained an open shot, but the goal was called off due to a TCU foul on the play.
TCU, who has now played in two overtime matches in the first six contests, improved to 5-0-1 for the best start in school history. The Frogs last overtime victory came against another Houston-based program last season, as Torda scored the game-winner against the University of Houston for a 1-0 on Sept. 30.The Purple and White will return to action to host East Tennessee State on Sept. 14. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
